European Bee-eater - Merops apiaster

Seeing Howard’s (Marhowie) in-flight capture of a Red Cardinal I was reminded of this moment that I was just lucky to capture on Lesvos where we sat in the car for a while observing several Bee-eaters feeding on insects in the grass on a field near Tsiknias river estuary. A couple of them flew up on to this branch every now and again for a rest and I’ve earlier posted a shot where they were sitting together on the branch.

I’ve always been an admirer of Howards’ fantastic in-flight captures but I’m afraid I’m not that technically minded and this one was just a lucky one! It was a very windy day and I captured this through the open car window from a distance of about 10 metres. It has been cropped and sharpened.

Hello Ulla,
Beautiful photo of this landing bird. Great timing! Good sharpness and natural colours. I can see it was very windy. In flight photos are most of the time very attractive. Time for me to post another in flight bird photo, maybe soon.
Regards,
Peter

Great job Ulla. Both are in your DOF, and two heads are better than one of course :)
That landing pose looks very familiar for some strange reason also ;)
Good colors, details, and the BG provides a softened look at the environment that contrasts with the birds nicely..
Well done!

Hi Ulla,

Seeing this might have been pure luck but capturing such a fine picture of these Bee-Eaters is an excellent example of your fine photography. I saw the picture before I saw the name and assumed it was Howard's. You froze the moment perfectly with beautiful colors and details. The one on the branch seems to be waiting patiently for the companion. I'm surprised you waited so long to post this gem.

Hi Ulla,

Cute capture of this colorful pair. The poses you caught are excellent, and the surroundings are natural the way I prefer. Sharpness and DOF are excellent as well, the blurred background is very nice. Exposure is spot-on MF!
TFS and have a great WE!
Cheers,

Bayram

Bonita y equilibrada composición. Naturalidad en los colores que como siempre mantienes gracias (supongo) al poco tratamiento electrónico que les aplicas.
Buen fin de semana Ulla.
