Syritta pipiens Linnaeus 1758
Diptera: Syrphidae
Common name: thick-legged hoverfly

Syritta pipiens is a very common hoverfly up to 0,5-0,7cm usually found flying low down amongst the vegetation or visiting flowers. Here it feeds on nectar of Mentha spicata flowers. The flight period for European specimens in southern Europe probably all the year round, but most records are from May through October.

Its larvae breeds in compost, manure and other rotting organic matter. Sometimes there are notable local population explosions, possibly due to mass emergence or perhaps migration.

Hi Nikos, very good macro of this small syrphidae, excellent detail and natural colors,my best compliments for the difficult identification too.Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano.

Hi Nikos, Good sharpness ad details with great DOF. The combination of the colors of the flowers with the color of the BG give nice elegance to the composition. The up side down view of the insect is quite interesting. Thank for sharing
