Rhynchium oculatum Fabricius 1781
Hymenoptera: Eumenidae

Rhynchium oculatum is a potter wasp of family Eumenidae very common in Crete and in Mediterranean region. There are six subspecies. Adults feed on nectar of flowering plants. Here it feeds on flowers of mint (Mentha spicata).
Biology : The sub-family Eumenidae is represented by approximately 3000 species in the world. They are very slender, solitary living predator wasps which make their nests out of mud and collect Lepidoptera (Geometridae, Tortricidae) caterpillars and Coleoptera (Curculionidae, Chyrysomelidae) larvae for their offsprings (GAULD & BOLTON 1988). For this reason they have an important role in biological control.
The species builds nests in holes of woods and paralyses caterpillars to serve as food for its larvae. Adults are seen from May to September.

I posted in WS the abdomen and front of the head, key characters of species

A lovely picture of a wasp, the colours are very vivid and exposure is excellent. The blurred background adds some depth. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Nikos,
Beautiful species and well captured despite darkness on its face portion(although it's very tough to get good light on face the way its sitting). Nice light and natural color. I like WS pictures too where we can see its different parts from different angle.
Thanks for sharing with informative NOTE,
Regards,
Srikumar
