Vanessa atalanta Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae (Linnaeus 1758)
Common name: Red amiral

The Red Admiral has a 4550 mm (1.82.0 in) wing span. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn. The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit. I have seen it many times to feed on overiped grapes in autumn. There are massive migrations in some cases of extreme dry ondition in spring in Crete and thousants larvae were feeding on grasses and cultivated vegetables.

There are 3-4 broods per year in Crete. It survives in winter due to very mild climate. In this case the color of wings is a little bit fade.

Atalanta is a figure in Greek mythology, a strong yet feminine woman who faces obstacles and backlash for refusing to follow gender norms.

Hello Nikos,
The Red Admiral is always an eye catcher and this particular one is no exception. You have done a fine job of photographing this brightly colored specimen. I like the dark BG as it keeps your attention on the butterfly. A real beauty!!

Hi Nikos
Outstanding butterfly, softly lit and well framed.

Regards

Hi, Nikos. This is an beautiful photograph of Vanessa atalanta Lepidoptera with excellent sharpness, natural colors especially the red which is difficult to capture. A lovely composition and the dark background enhances the beauty of the subject. Thanks for sharing.

Kalimera Nikos,
Composition's eye-pleasing and the bright butterfly stands out quite well against the dark turquoise background (water?), due to the flash usage. Some little white parts on the wings became slightly overexposd, but they aren't really disturbing. Spectacular pose / position, and great shallow DoF. Wonderful photo, bravo!
Kind regards from Ireland, László
