Carcharodus alceae (Esper, 1780)

Common english name: Mallow Skipper

C.alceae is probably the most widespread and easiest to observe of all the Skippers eventhough it is not a very high density species. If disturbed, the male will buzz off swiftly but will return to the same or a nearby perch.
This butterfly is similar to the marbled skipper and tufted marbled skipper but is generally darker and browner than either and has less white on the wings. The white markings on the forewing are very linear.

Range. Widespread in N Africa , Sud and Central Europe to 52° N. Absent from Britain, Fennoscandia and Baltic countries. Temperate Asia to S. Siberia and N. India

Habitat/Flight. Coastal hills, flowery meadows, grassy slopes, stony places and arid areas, from SL to 1600m or more. It flies from March to September in a succession of broods throughout the summer. Larvae take Malva sylvestris and other plants.

Beautiful details on this skipper, Marcello.
The focus is outstanding, and the colors are wonderfully warm.
Good presentation with the wings spread out and well seen against a contrasting green BG.
