Gonepteryx cleopatra (Linnaeus, 1767)

The Cleopatra is a close relation of the Brimstone, (Gonepteryx rhamni) and replaces it in the south of Europe.
It occurs widely distributed in S Europe from sea level to 1000m or more.
The first brood usually emerges in June-July. A smaller second brood may occur in late August/September.
They hibernate as adults so you are most likely to see them in early spring.
In some southern localities fresh individuals may appear in February, suggesting the possibility of “overwintered” pupae.

ciao sERGIO

Great macro Marcello. Such weirdo situations repaeteedly occur nowadays as the global warming. Some swallows stop migrating. Everything acts mad.

Wow! And you took this today?!?! The Herald of Spring has arrived!!... in Italy atleast, and I think that title is given to the Brimstone anyway :-)
Very nice shot anyhow.
Brilliant composition and POV.
Superb DOF.
Nice colours as well.
Great work Marcello!

Hi Marcello

A very beautiful shot from you and an excellent presentation!
I really liked reading about this species' ecology in your note - it's really a very interesting phenomenon :)
The picture is very well taken, with great sharpness on the Cleopatra and with vivid colors.
A good DOF here meant a very nice isolation from the BG, bringing out the butterfly even better.
Nicely done!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Marcello,
It looks very fresh to me! I've seen one here too the other week but that one must have come out of hibernation! Excellent capture with terrific sharp details and fine natural colours. I like the background and the composition is very pleasing.
Many thanks, Ulla

Ciao Marcello,
you nicely captured a beautiful specimen of cleopatra which looks very fresh rather than hibernated.
Clearly, G. rhamni belong to the first sightings of the year in our region and in Turkey I could observe overwintered G. farinosa, but rather worn!
Enjoy and keep on observing nature!
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Marcello,

Hi Marcello.
Simply outstanding picture of the beautiful butterfly. I am amazed with great lighting and very pleasant for eyes colour palette. Image of the butterfly is brilliant. You have reproduced every tiny detail. Sharpness is really razor. Cropping of the picture is perfect too as well as the nice blurred BG. My congratulations on so excellent job.

Hello Marcello,
I like the overall butterfly sharpness. Excellent details.

Great, Marcello,
Gonepteryx has been presented before on TN, but certainly not this species! You surprise us once more with a perfect shot of an little known but beautiful species! Well done.
My best regards
