This is the small alpine form of the fritillary butterfly
- Euphydryas aurinia
- subspecies: debilis
- family: Nymphalidae

Species information
E. aurinia is widespread in Europe and Asia, eastwards to Korea.
Foodplant of the caterpillar: Scabiosa

- The subspecies debilis is restricted to mountain areas in the Pyrenees and the Alps and prefers habitats above 2000 m.
It is smaller and not so colourful compared to the lowland subspecies.
Wing span: about 32 mm.

Comparison of forewing lengths between subspecies:
- 15-17 mm ssp. debilis
- 17-19 mm ssp. aurinia
- 19-22 mm ssp. provincialis
- 20-23 mm ssp. beckeri

Upper Martell-Valley in the North-Italian Alps.
Open alpine meadows at about 2400m.

An excellent macro of the male of this ssp of aurinia. The sharpness, DOF, composition and BG are all of top quality and if this specimen were a little fresher this would be a perfect portrait.

Magnificent capture, in classic pose with wings extended. Very good colors, making lately are superbly natural colors in your photos. As always, the level of detail is higher.

I now it's not a perfectly fresh specimen and it has shed quite a lot of scales, but this is a very nice image of this variable species. Your image shows well the slightly different colour form compared to our tiny local lowland population.
