Series: Satyrinae of the North Italian Alps
Picture: no. 2

This is a couple of
- Melanargia galathea
English: Marbled White
German: Schachbrettfalter, Damenbrett

In contrast to the male, the female shows a slight yellow-brown colour. This is usually not the case. Thus, this picture shows a particular female form which, however, is not rare.

Melanargia galathea is widely distributed in Europe and is rather common in its habitats. The species is easily recognized in most areas in spite of great variation in the extension of the dark wing pattern elements. Specimens of Val Venosta (shown here) are large and show large clear white markings. In contrast, speciemens of the Friaul territory in north-east Italy can have completely dark brown wing uppersides. Correspondingly, a number of subspecies have been described.

Caterpillars, as usual for Satyrinae, feed on several grass species.
The eggs are simply dropped by the females and not attached as is the case for most other species of the Satyrinae.

This pictures was taken at the southwards directed dry and sunny slopes of the Val Venosta (Vinschgau) which receive a lot of sun. The place is not far from the Tartscher Bühel where I took my last picture of Chazara briseis.

Hello Peter,

Again a very beautiful picture. Nice composition, sharpness is excellent. The patterns on the wings are really beautiful.
Thanks for sharing.

Ciao Peter,

Congrats Peter,
Overall sharp! Very good light. Delicate tones; one is a little bit more yellowish compared to the other.
Really great!

Wow!
Welch ein schöner Moment. Ich hab' meinen in Italien, Nähe Etschtal erwischt. Vielen Dank und lieben Gruß

Hi Peter,
Outstanding shot of these mating beauties with immaculate details and patterns on their wings. Superb lighting and exposure and they stand out well against the darkish green BG. Interesting colour difference in the male and female. Excellent POV to capture this moment and a great diagonal composition. Kudos.

Hallo Peter,
Schärfe gestochen, Belichtung perfekt, Bildaufbau exzellent.
Wohltuend verhaltene Kontraste und subtile Farben.
Wunderbares Sujet, meisterlich festgehalten!

Amicalement Robi
