Series: Satyrinae of the North Italian Alps
Picture: no. 6

The species shown is a male of
- Chazara briseis
- Nymphalidae, Satyrinae,
- tribe: Satyrini
Common names:
English: Hermit
German: Berghexe
French: L'Hermit

I showed a female of Ch. briseis as # no.1 of this series. I partially repeat the text here:
Ch. briseis is found very localized. In the narrow habitats, however, often numerous specimens can be observed. The species is very shy and it is nearly impossible to come very close to them. After several unsuccessful trials with my macro-lens which I usually use, I tried my 40-150mm lens in combination with an extension tube. This worked better but was nevertheless difficult because the butterflies were always very busy resting on the flowers a few seconds only:
This is the result of my efforts.

Chazara brisies prefers warm ('hot'), sun-exposed and dry places and likes stony slopes with low vegetation and rocky out-crops. On the latter it can be found collecting sun energy exposing its wings in the most suitable angle to the sun. Although widely distributed in middle and southern Europe, it is found very locally only. Towards its northern distribution limits populations are restricted in space and are often vulnerable or threatened due to potential anthropogenic disturbance of their 'small' habitats.

The picture was taken in Val Venosta (Vinschgau) in the vicinity of Tarces (Tartsch). Here you can find a population of C. briseis which is restricted to a small exposed hill.

- in addition to the lens a Olympus Digital Extension Tube EX-25 was used.

Hello Peter,
What a lovely composition with this beautiful butterfly in focus showing great details and beautiful colours. You're wise to have kept some of your lovely butterflies to show us now, I don't have many left!
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Ciao Peter,

Peter
