Chalcides ocellatus (Forskĺl 1775)

Ocellated Skink
Italian name: gongilo

This skink belongs to the genus Chalcides with the widest distribution range: from southwestern Morocco to the entire Arabian Peninsula and from Sardinia to Somalia.
In Europe, it is mainly distributed on islands: Sicily and on the western and southern circum-Sicilian islands; Sardinia and some satellite islands; Maltese Archipelago; Crete, Rhodes and some other Aegean islands.
Sicilian and Sardinian populations, referred to ssp. tiligugu.
Generally well-distributed in the Mediterranean region from sea level up to mountain woodlands.
In Sicily, it occurs mainly in xeric habitats with scarce vegetation and on coastal areas.
C. ocellatus feeds on arthropods, snails and vegetal matter, showing a relatively wide trophic spectrum.
The Ocellated Skink digs tunnels under stones, litter, plants, or hide in refuges of other species.
Activity decreases when temperatures fall below 15° C, even if the species can be active throughout the year. In Sicily active individuals were observed on sunny winter days.

Hello Marcello!
This is really very unusual picture as for you my Friend! :) But I like it a lot - this species is really new for me (and for TN too, I believe). Only some white reflections do not look very nice, but all other elements (DOF, details, sharpness, colours) are really great for watching.
All the best from Lodz!
Radomir

Ciao Marcello,
What a splendid picture!
I like the rich coloured composition made.
Great light&details on the reptile's skin.
So good the way the light reflections define the head's structure.
Congratulations and thanks for port it.
Warm regards,
JM

Hello Marcello,

Hi Marcello
Beautiful shot. Great 3 dimensional effect in background. Nice vivid colors and perfect sharpness. Also very interesting reptile. Fantastic educational and also very aestetic presentation

Gorgeous image with fantastic colors. Great clarity and detail too! Kudos! Cheers, Klaus

Hi Marcello,
Nice capture of an ocellated skink and wonderful color-pattern, this subspecies is very different than that of here (the nominate race). TFS. Greetings.
