[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The species shown on the picture can locally occur in high numbers on alpine meadows and makes up the most abundant butterfly species at these places, such as here in the upper Martell-Valley or even more impressive in the nearby Peder-Valley.

Here, I show a couple (female: right) of
- Coenonympha gardetta (=Coenonympha satyrion)
- family: Nymphalidae
- tribe: Satyrini
- subtribe: Coenonymphina

English: Alpine Heath
German: Alpen-Heufalter

Information on the subtribe
Species of the subtribe Coenonymphina occur in palaearctic Eurasia and in North America (2 Coenonympha). The subtribe includes 3 genera only:
> Coenonympha: 31 species
> Sinonympha: 1 species
> Triphysa: 2 species

Information on the species
Coenonympha gardetta occurs exclusively in the European Alps and a small disjunct area in the French Massif Centrale. It is found on flower-rich alpine slopes in altitudes above 2000 m. Visiting the right place at the right time, you can observe huge numbers of specimens.

Similar species in Europe:
- Coenonympha arcania
- Coenonympha darwiniana

Wing span: about 27 mm.

Location: North Italian Alps, upper Martell-Valley. Open alpine meadow with rocky outcrops at about 2600m.

Conditions
- bright sunlight
- ISO 200
- handheld

Lieber Peter,
Bravo!
Einen schönen Sonntag wünscht Dir und Deiner Familie
Anne

Hello Peter, it is a very nice capture and more important than that, the note you have written with it, is very good. Notes like this make people learn a lot in short time. Thanks for making it precise and informative.

We do not have these small butterflies around my place, I saw them for the first time here (considering that I am a new-comer to TN).

The details are very good, thanks for sharing!

Hallo Peter,

Peter
