The Green-veined White (Pieris napi) is a butterfly of the Pieridae family.
A circumboreal species widespread across Europe and Asia, including the Indian subcontinent, Japan and the Maghreb and North America (Many authors consider the Mustard White of North America to be conspecific with napi or consider napi to be a superspecies. It is found in meadows, hedgerows and woodland glades but not as often in gardens and parks like its close relatives the Large and Small Whites, for which it is often mistaken. Like other "white" butterflies, the sexes differ. The female has two spots on each forewing, the male only one. The veins on wings of the female are usually more heavily marked. The underside hindwings are pale yellow with the veins highlighted by black scales giving a greenish tint, hence Green-veined White! Unlike these two butterflies it rarely chooses garden cabbages to lay its eggs on, preferring wild crucifers.
The eggs are laid singularly on a wide range of foodplants including Hedge mustard Sisybrium officinale Garlic Mustard Alliaria petiolata, Cuckooflower Cardamine pratense, Water-cress Rorippa nastutium-aquaticum, Charlock Sinapis arvensis, Large bitter-cress Cardamine amara, wild cabbage Brassica oleracea and wild Radish Raphanus raphanistrum and so it is rarely a pest in gardens. The caterpillar is green and well camouflaged. It is often found feeding on the same plant as the Orange Tip but never competes for food because it only feeds on the leaves whereas the Orange Tip caterpillar feeds on the flowers and developing seed pods. Like other Pieris spp. it overwinters as a pupa.
Pieris napi is found in damp, grassy places with some shade, forest edges, hedgerows, meadows and wooded river valleys. The later generations, widen their catchment areas in the search for alternative forage crops in drier, but flowery places . In the Mediterranean the insect is also found in scrub around mountain streams or springs and on floodplains with Nasturtium officinale. It is found from sea level to high altitude (2500m. in Central Europe centrale, 2600 m in Italy).
The generations vary with location, altitude and season. In Northern Europe, there are two or three generations from April to early September. In warmer areas, and in some good years there is a fourth generation. In southern Europe there are three or more partially overlapping generations from March to October.
Recent research has shown that when males mate with a female, they inject methyl salicylate along with their sperm. The smell of this compound repels other males, thus ensuring the first male's paternity of the eggs—a form of chemical mate guarding.
The adult male of this species has a distinctive odour that resembles lemon verbena.
Some authorities consider Pieris napi to be a superspecies including the West Virginia White Butterfly , the Mustard White and the *Dark-veined White.


PIERIS NAPI
La Pieride del navone (Pieris napi (Linnaeus, 1758), è un lepidottero della famiglia Pieridae.
Questa farfalla, di colorazione generalmente biancastra, presenta striature verdi o squame grigiastre in corrispondenza delle venature della parte inferiore dell'ala posteriore. Le ali presentano macchie scure su ambo i lati, più accentuate negli esemplari di sesso femminile (dimorfismo sessuale).
Le generazioni sviluppate durante l'estate hanno macchie alari meno pronunciate rispetto a quelle primaverili, e le nervature appaiono più sottili. In talune aree alpine, le parti superiori dei maschi hanno nervature molto accentuate, e quelle delle femmine risultano completamente spolverate di marrone.
Le uova, a forma di birillo, si trovano tra marzo e settembre, e vengono deposte sulle foglie singolarmente.
Le larve sono visibili da aprile a ottobre, sono verdi e non hanno striature gialle sul dorso (vedi Pieris rapae).
Le pupe o crisalidi si rinvengono da giugno a marzo, per cui è con questo stadio che la specie affronta i rigori invernali. Sono verdognole, succinte sulle piante ospiti, o su supporti di diversa natura.
La specie è paleartica, ampiamente diffusa più o meno in tutta l'Eurasia e in Nord America; si riscontra anche in Finlandia, nel Giura, nei Carpazi e nel Caucaso.
Gode di ampia diffusione in tutta Italia.
La si rinviene in boscaglia rada, zone incolte, o in corrispondenza di giardini, siepi, argini fluviali e praterie umide, dal livello del mare fino a 2500 m di quota in Europa centrale, e fino a 2600 m in Italia.
Visibile da marzo a novembre, con 1-3 generazioni l'anno.
A differenza di quanto avviene per altre specie congeneri come Pieris rapae e Pieris brassicae, le larve si trovano raramente su varietà coltivate del genere Brassica.

ormai le farfalle volano sui prati e già passano ai primi incontri amorosi, un momento che nella scorsa stagione, almeno da quello che mi ricordo dai tuoi commenti, hai colto in poche occasioni, potrebbe essere un buon segnale; altra ottima macro; personalmente mi sono bloccato e non certo per mancanza di immagini, visto che molte specie non le ho mai inserite, ma TN funziona in modo da rubarti il tempo .... m'interrogo se devo esserci per dire qualcosa o perché ho qualcosa da dire .......... se mi basassi solo sulle tue adulazioni avrei la risposta ..... comunque non ho chiuso e se avrò più disponibilità di tempo mi ci dedicherò .....

Bonjour Luciano,
J'avais manqué cette image très plaisante d'un couple très harmonieux de Pieris napi. Une présenatation de toute beauté, le blanc est magistralement rendu et l'arrière-plan sombre contribue à un contraste idéal. Belle pose aussi sur cette feuille-pont un peu trouée. Bravo encore, Luciano!
