Nothing new in my hunt today, but I was lucky to photograph the dark side of the peacock butterfly, the only one we can find anywhere before the arrival of spring.

Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
(unranked) Rhopalocera
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Nymphalinae
Tribe: Nymphalini
Genus: Inachis
Species: I. io

The European peacock caterpillar (Inachis io), more commonly known simply as the peacock caterpillar, is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe and Asia. It is the only member of the genus Inachis which is sometimes included in Nymphalis. It should not be confused or classified with the "American peacocks" in the genus Anartia; these are not close relatives of the present species. The peacock butterfly is resident in much of its range, often wintering in buildings or trees. It therefore often appears quite early in spring. The butterfly hibernates over winter before laying its eggs in early spring, in batches of up to 500 at a time. The caterpillars, which are shiny black with six rows of barbed spikes and a series of white dots on each segment, hatch after about a week and feed on nettles and hops.
The adult butterflies drink nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, including buddleia, sallows, dandelions, wild marjoram, danewort, hemp agrimony, and clover; they also utilize tree sap and rotten fruit. The Peacock can be found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 8,200 feet elevation. It is a relatively common butterfly seen in many European parks and gardens.

Good point of view, Luciano. The image is quite sharp and partial view of the upper wing goes well in the composition.
Butterflies have started making their appearance in north India too where we have severe winters.

Bonjour Luciano,

La feuille aide à cadrer le papillon. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails du papillon Paon du jour. La bonne luminosité fait ressortir la beauté des couleurs. On dirait que le printemps est en avance en Italie, bonne journée.

The perfect vertical composition, beautiful and greeting from Balochistan.

Hi Luciano,
I thought I knew the species and there would be nothing new to me. But the shot is delightful, with just a bit colour at the edge !
Greetings, Dietrich

Ciao Luciano,
this is a charming portrait of Vanessa io returning to life after Long months of hibernation! I like the way you are sdemonstrating the perfect dry leaf camouflage of its resting pose in cheerful contrast to a promising glimpse of occhio di pavone on the conspicous upper side of wings. Thank you!
With best regards,
