Gastropacha quercifolia (Linnaeus, 1758)
Continua la stagione delle grandi pioggie, è anche freddo e non vola nulla, vi propongo questo grosso bombice che può raggiungere anche i 9 cm di apertura alare. Costituisce uno degli esempi più eclatanti di mimetismo per via della forma assunta a riposo, con ali che simulano nei contorni e nel colore foglie morte di quercia. Mostra notevole variabilità nella tonalità. Il dimorfismo sessuale consiste in una taglia maggiore ed in una colorazione più chiara delle femmine. Due generazioni annue nel Meridione, una con sfarfallamenti in tarda primavera e inizio estate, l'altra ad agosto e settembre. Il bruco sverna in una fase precoce per riprendere lo sviluppo in maggio e giugno nutrendosi avidamente delle foglie di alberi fruttiferi (meli, peri, pruni, noccioli), ma anche di querce, sorbi, salici, provocando anche ingenti danni. La ninfosi, della durata di una diecina di giorni, avviene all'interno di un bozzolo dal colore grigiastro costruito tra i rami. In Europa, escluse le regioni artiche, e in Asia temperata fino alla Cina e al Giappone. Presente in Italia, ma con maggiore frequenza nella Penisola. Prediletti sono gli ambienti caldi ed umidi, dalla pianura a 1200 m. La qualità è scarsa, ma l’ho scattata con un obiettivo non idoneo.

The season of the big rains continues, it is also cold and does not fly anything, I propose you this big bomber that can reach even 9 cm of wingspan. It constitutes one of the most striking examples of mimicry due to the shape taken at rest, with wings that simulate in the contours and in the color dead leaves of oak. It shows considerable variability in tone. Sexual dimorphism consists of a larger size and a lighter color than the females. Two generations in the South, one with flickering in late spring and early summer, the other in August and September. The caterpillar winters at an early stage to resume development in May and June by greedily feeding on the leaves of fruit trees (apple, pear, plum, hazel), but also oak, rowan, willow, causing extensive damage. The nymphosis, lasting about ten days, takes place inside a greyish colored cocoon built between the branches. In Europe, excluding the Arctic regions, and in temperate Asia up to China and Japan. Present in Italy, but more frequently in the Peninsula. The warm and humid environments are preferred, from the plain to 1200 m. The quality is poor, but I took it with an unsuitable lens.

Just the human instinct try to find the eye to create a face for this species, it is well composed and exposed, beautiful click.

Very interesting species of Moth, Silvio. Despite your the lens not meeting your approval, it is a good shot with nice details and colours.
