Pyronia cecilia (Vallantin, 1894),

Southern Gatekeeper,
Lobito agreste do Sul,
Südliches Gelbes Ochsenauge.

Family: Satyridae

Wingspan: approx. 35 – 40mm

Like many other Satyrids, the Gatekeeper is shy and loves to rest with wings closed. After an early afternoon summer thunderstorm, this male appears from its shelter and spreads its wings to warm up.

Gatekeepers are rather small butterflies, and quite conspicuous for their rich reddish ochre colours, the double eyespots and – with the males - also for an extended dark spot in the centre of the forewings that contains scenting scales.

Having a close look at that picture in order to make sure about the identification for TN, I discovered just before posting that this Gatekeeper is in fact a “Southern Gatekeeper”, as can be seen from the yellow veins crossing the dark spots with the scenting scales.

The “ordinary” Gatekeeper (Pyronia tithonus Linnaeus 1771), showing scenting scale spots without yellow veins, is well known from England, Southern Ireland, Southwestern, Central and Southeastern Europe, inhabiting dry deciduous forests from the lowlands into the mountains up to 1000m above sea level. The Southern Gatekeeper (Pyronia cecilia) is reported from North Africa, Southern Spain, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Italy, the Croation coast, Greece, and Turkey.

Caterpillars feed on grass, e.g. Aira caespitosa. The butterflies can be seen from May to August, in two generations.

This picture was taken at the shores of Lago d’Idro in Northern Italy, on August 4, 2004. In spite of the rather dark light conditions shortly after the rain, no flash was used in order to maintain the natural colours and shadows of the setting.

Camera: Minolta Dimage 7Hi, with integrated tele-zoom and macro. 5 Megapixel resolution, 44mm, F=3.5, 1/180sec., ISO-100, 2004-08-04, 15:36.

Thank you for looking.
Have a nice day.

Excellent shot. You could crop a bit from the top and right without losing anything, though.

This is a high quality capture, Peter. Natural colors have come out very well.
Needless to say, you set high standards when it comes to nature photography.

Schönen Abend und liebe Grüße

Hi Peter
Very nice shot
Goog composition and POV and I like the BG very much.

Now, I think we don't see this one around here. I met his "ordinary" brother (Pyronia tithonus) many times, but not this one.

Regards, Petru

Hello Peter, colors, details, b.g. all perfect.... Well done TFS

The orange is so beautiful on this green.
the stains on both butterflies and leaves are great: repeating pattern makes that both fit even better to each other.
A masterpiece.

hello Peter!
beautiful example of Pyronia captured on Lake Hydro, next to my land, with excellent resolution of color and focus
wishes for a happy 2009

Lieber Peter,
Gute Nacht
