Pomarine Jaeger or Pomarine Skua does not normaly occur in Luxembourg.Due to heavy weather conditions on the North Sea,this bird has been deported far inland ( ~350km from the Sea Coast ) where it was found exhausted and died 2 days later.

This species breeds in the far north of Eurasia and North America. It nests on arctic tundra and islands, laying 2-3 olive-brown eggs in grass lined depressions. Like other skuas, it will fly at the head of a human or other intruder approaching its nest. Although it cannot inflict serious damage, the experience is frightening and painful. It is a migrant, wintering at sea in the tropical oceans. It has many harsh chattering calls and others which sounds like which-yew.

This bird feeds on lemmings and other rodents on the breeding grounds and also robs gulls, terns and even Gannets of their catches; it will also kill birds up to the size of Common Gull. Like most other skua species, it continues this piratical behaviour throughout the year, showing great agility as it harasses its victims.

Hello Caroline,
A Pomarine Jaeger (skua) in Luxembourg! I couldn't believe it until I read your note, as it is not the kind of species of bird that can be kept in captivity and if it were in captivity I wouldn't be writing this critique. But this is special: a perfect close portrait of an exhausted bird blown inland by the storms.
Excellent use of flash with extraordinary sharpness showing every detail of the head. The best way to photograph a hand-held bird.

Hi Caroline.
What a wonderful portrait of the cute skua. I like true portrait pose of the bird, POV and framing. Details, sharpness and colour reproduction are the great. Even simple grey BG is looked perfectly and harmonize with main subject. My compliments and TFS.

Hi Caroline, this is a very good shot of the Pomarine. It is very clear, clean and sharp. Wonderful focus with a perfect exposure and all is sharp, especially that beak. Good light on the eye. Nice composition.
