Hello my Friends!
Not so long ago I presented a male of Lucanus cervus cervus (Coleoptera: Lucanidae), so today a lady od this species :>
As you can see comparing both pictures, a significant sexual dimorphism can be seen. And today I would like to write a few words about main "types" of these morphological differences in insect sexes :>

1. Body size - usually females are bigger and wider (it is important from energetic point of view, as they have to keep energy for producing and laying eggs), such examples can be easy found in grasshoppers, crickets, many beetles, mantises, wasps, and flies. Males are bigger rather rare, eg. in rhino and stag beetles (Dynastidae and Lucanidae).

2. Morphological structures - in some beetle species (Dynastidae, Tenebrionidae) males posses different horns on heads and thoraxes, in other beetles (Lucanidae) – huge mandibles are present. In both cases males use them during fight in courtships. In many moths (eg. Lymantriidae) and beetles (eg. Elatyridae, Cerambycidae, Meloidae) males have wider and longer antennae to better “collect” pheromone signals from females. On the other hand in some insects females have reduced wings and can not fly (eg. fireflies – Lampyridae, many Homoptera bugs, cockroaches – Blattodea, some moths belonging to Geometridae and Lymantriidae, and Streptiptera).

3. Body colouration - usually males have much more coluorful bodies (or at least less “grey” :>), , such dimorphism can be seen among moths and butterflies (eg. Lymantriidae, Pieridae), beetles (some Cicindelidae, Carabidae, Cerambycidae), and damselflies (Zygoptera).

4. Musical talent - characteristic for males of grasshoppers, crickets (Orthoptera) but also ciccades (Cicadoidea). Males play music using special structures on their bodies, absent in females.

5. Bioluminescence - in opposition to musician talent this phenomenon is characteristic for females (eg. fireflies – Lampyridae). Like in case of music in males of Orthoptera and Cicadoidea, bioluminescence is used by females to attract partners during courtships.

All the best and have a nice Sunday! :>

Hello Radomir,
A fine-frame-filling macro of a female L. cervus taken with excellent sharpness and lighting from a dorsal POV. This impressive species is now quite rare in Sweden but I think it is relatively commonin the Balkans. Whe saw several one evening in Slovenia about 10 yrs ago, but that was before I had a digital camera.
Greetings from a wintery Sweden!:((

Hi Radomir.
Sorry, I also missed many your wonderful shot. This one is top quality too. This spring I pictured another species of beetle. I could not achieved anything similar. Terrific reproduction of the texture and all other details and parts of the beetle. Sharpness is razor and colours are nice and pleasant for look. Bravo. Perfect work.
