Summer flashback from our hot hollidays in Gulf of Kotor. This is probably Woodland Grayling [Hipparchia fagi] - thanks for ID must go to Cataclysta - sitting on old tree and almost invisible. One day Joanna stayed at hotel and I went to nearby mountains to catch some shots for TN. I saw few interesting insects and most interesting of all was quite large butterfly. It was black with white V-stripes on its wings. Unfortunatelly it was very shy, too. I was chasing it for good half of hour and had no chance to take good shot. Finally it landed on an old and dried tree on the edge of abyss :-) So, I had no choice. Putting my life to risk I climbed to rock where tree was placed and took few not bad shots. Did I mention that day was sunny and temperature was about 40C degrees and I was all sweaty? Anyway :-) I like this kind of 'adventures' - butterfly flew its own way and I returned to hotel with this photo. Everybody was happy :-)

This is perfect picture for today - when I'm writting these words I see snow outside my window :-( Stupid winter came at least one month too early... So it is good to remember hot time in beautifull Montenegro.

Look at my workshop - this is tree where I spotted the butterfly. On BG old town of Kotor and Gulf of Kotor with surrounding mountains.

This post is dedicated for Cedryk - we almost met in Kotor this year [he arrived one day after our leave] and I know he loves this place!

Magnificent shot and close-up. I like very much the POV. Really the camouflage is perfect. Thanks for posting it.
Best wishes

Hi Grzegorz,
great photo, Im glad you even spotted this butterfly. Anyone could completely just walk straight by this well camouflaged butterfly. Everything about the photo seems good.

Hello Grzegorz,
a nice nature document of this hiding Hipparchia. Sharp details and superb point of view, just underlining the camouflage.
I like pictures like this one (although not so colourful).
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Grzegorz,
It is quite characteristic for members of this genus of butterfly to rely on camouflage for protection and your shot shows this very well. The butterfly is presented in fine detail and the shot well composed and put into perspective by the greenery on the right.
Well done!
TFS, regards, Ivan

Sharpness and details are great. Good camouflage.

Are you on a leg pulling mission or what, Greg? I saw your picture of the tree in the workshop and it appears to me to be a harmless spot :-)!
Anyway, this is a marvellous picture that exhibits the mechanism of camouflage at its best. The butterfly is completely merged into the colours and patterns on the bark of the tree.
Yes, the 'abyss' below the butterfly is frightening alright ;-)!

Hi Greg,
this shot has not a good contrast ... (haha - just a joke!!!)
Very good protection and camouflage.
I like the shining wings of this beauty hiding at this tree-stomp. Excellent sharpness, very well done, thanks and greetings

Perfect example of total mimicry my friend.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, color, lighting, notes, framing and Workshop.

I like it: background.

I don't like it: the lack of the values of the image.

An excellent capture with the bonus of the panoramic of the place.
Best regards and have a nice weekend!.

I see it! I see it!
What clever camouflage it has Greg. And I am smiling rading your notes - yes, I can see you running and jumping and tripping over yourself while chasing this Kotor b'fly! And in the heat - dream on about the heat now while it is snowing outside my friend.

Hi Grzegorz, great mimetism and splendid photo, great sharpness, beautiiful details, bellissima, Ciao Silvio

Excellent capture Greg.
The camouflage effect is maximum :)

Yes, you made me a great pleasure with that shot. I love Kotor a lot. This year I spent there some 5 days, enjoying the amazingly beautiful old town and climbing the fortress. I really hoped to meet Grzegorz there and do some joint TN photo session but... it's just a life of traveller, we missed each other with one day.

It's funny as we live in the same town, commenting each other pictures, communicating by e-mail and even have some common friends but never could meet each other in real life. We even tried to meet few times but there was always something preventing :-)

Anyway, thank you my TN friend!
Great shot, nice note...

Hi Greg,
The butterfly blends perfectly with the log. The colors and detail look perfect from the spot on exposure. Well composed and framed. I am willing to bet you have a well stocked portfolio for the long winter.
Looks great.
