Anacridium aegyptium - Egyptian locust
Family: Acrididae
Order: Orthoptera

This amazingly green insect is a nymph of an Egyptian locust. It's definitely one of the biggest grasshoppers in Europe. When adult it may be up to 7 cm in length and up to 15 cm in wing span. The adult specimens are grey or brown but nymphs are often vivid green.

It's a circummediterranean species, sometimes introduced north with agricultural products. Usually it occurs in xerophylic habitats and does not make any troubles. However sometimes it may have a gregarious phase as its close cousin, the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria), and then it make damages to crops.

Probably this species was responsible for most of the locust swarms in Central Europe in XVIII century. In Poland last such event took place in 1730, but the most famous one was in 1711 in Zwierzyniec Lubelski in south-eastern Poland, where after fighting this plague a commemorative obelisk was erected.

I have taken this specimen when resting on a young Pomegranate (Punica granatum) shrub on a bank of the Skadar Lake.

Hi Michal,
Greatly capturing this young grasshopper. Nice DoF, sharp and neat result. Well composed and nicely framed. Black with white lining is my favorite frame color, since it is well matched with most colors of any image.
Superb shot and great PP works.

No prosze, czyli byly jakies owady w Czarnogorze ;-) Mnie sie nie udalo niestety spotkac zadnego nadzwyczajnego. Ten wyglada kosmicznie, szczegolnie oczy. Piekna kompozycja zlozona z zieleni. Bardzo ostry i szczegolowy. Ciekawe, kiedy dotrze do nas ;-) ?

Michal, you did great in spotting this.

Besides, excellent sharpness, composition and colors; I like pov and saturation too.

A perfect job.

Hi Michal,
An excellent shot on this young Egyptian Locust. The vivd green color looks amazing. Very sharp detail!! He blends perfectly with his surroundings. I love the stripes on the eye. Great shot!

Hi Michal,
fascinating nymph with surprisingly colourful eyes.
Clear and sharp image, well exposed, well composed.
Interesting notes, too - in particular your story with the obelisk in Poland. Can remember to have seen just one or two individuals of similar migrant giant grasshoppers near Vienna, Austria - adult ones, brown colour, but medieval records tell of swarms even deep into some alpine valleys, long ago.
Excellent demonstration of camouflage, by the way.
First thing I noticed was just the eye, making me believe to see a droplet of water or some tiny beetle, before realizing the large insect full size.
With thanks, and best regards,

Muy, pero muy bonita macro Michal con excelente DOF y foco, intensos colores y muy buen fondo difuso.
Apropiado encuadre vertical... no lo incluiste en los datos... la captura fue con o sin flash? (pregunto por algunos reflejos visibles).
Bien hecho.
Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

Very, very nice macro Michal with excellent DOF and focus, intense colors and very good diffuse background.
appropriate vertical framing... you didn't include it in the data... with or without flash? (I ask for some visible reflections).
Well done.
Thank you and greetings... Ricardo

HEllo Michal,
I'm sorry I've missed this terrific green shot earlier! What a beautiful locust nymph! Very sharp close-up and excellent background. I would have guessed the nymph would be brown! Grasshoppers and Crickets I find very hard to identify!! Well done!
Many thanks, Ulla

The tonal quality and detail are excellent. The change is green and texture creates a nice gradient and the position of the locust adds to the vertical composition. Well done.

Dear Michal,
this pic is interesting to me for several reasons. 1) it is done in full sunlight and it worked out fine; 2) it's a nymph, so different in aspect from the adult; 3) it recalls to me an adult female Aegyptian locust as a pet in my office where it was walking around freely for three months; in the end, to my chagrin, someone stood upon it. You succeeded your pic well, congratulations! And thanks for the detailed and instructive note.
With my best wishes to you for the New Year, Dietrich

piekny jest, te oczy sa cudne. Podziwiam zwierzeta za to ze potrafią się tak cudnie kamuflowac. Ostrość powalająca no i te kolory..

Witaj Michale,
Faktycznie, tak jak napisal Krzysiek przed dwoma laty, ze wiele osob przegapilo to piekne zdjecie. Teraz maja szanse do niego wrocic, bo jest do niego link u Krzyska.
Przypuszczalnie gdyby ten konik skoczyl w moim kierunku, to by grozilo zawalem serca.
Zdjecie piekne, ostre i w cudownych kolorach. Kadrowanie idealnie.
Gratuluje i pozdrawiam - Roma
