cave cricket - Dolichopoda sp.
Family: Rhaphidophoridae
Suborder: Ensifera
Order: Orthoptera

I photographed this amazing cricket with spider-like legs and antennae in Obodska Pecina cave. This deep and beautiful cave contains an underground river - a spring of Crnojevica River, an affluent of the Skadar Lake. The cave is known for several endemic species of invertebrates that occur only there or in few other caves on the Adriatic coast.

Crickets of genus Dolichopoda are widespread in southern Europe. Until now 34 species have been discovered - most of them also endemic to very restricted cave areas. They live in dark, moist environment feeding on the decaying organic matter, eg. on bat feaces. We found large colonies of this flying mammals in the cave.

Please see the workshop to look at the entire body of the cricket and get the idea of length of its appendages.

Hi Michal,
Cool shot of this cave dweller. I posted a similar camel cricket, shot with the Olympus awhile back..
Excellent use of flash to bring out sharp detail and good color. Very good POV, and composed well also.
Thanx for the full-frame WS.
Nicely done & TFS!

Czesc Michal!

Bardzo interesujacy pierwszy 'zwierz' z ostatniej wyprawy. Podoba mi sie brazowy odcien, kompozycja i punkt widzenia. Ostro i szczegolowo. W dodatku zrobic takie zdjecie w jaskini to prawdziwa sztuka.

Zobaczylismy mianowicie - uwaga! - cztery kormorany. I tyle.

A tak w ogole to z dzisiejszej wyprawy przywiozlem sobie sloik kielzy :-) Wpuscilem do akwarium z osliczkami i krewetkami. Na razie wszyscy maja sie dobrz ;-)

Hello Michal,
an impressive picture of this cave dweller. Extremely sharp and detailed. Colours are nice and appear very authentic.

Czesc Misiu
Wreszcie pierwsze zdjecie z Albanii. Fantastyczny zwierzak.

Hello Michal,
a very unusual, bizarre looking insect you have presented here with excellent details. Both pictures together make a perfect presentation of this rare endemite species that certainly is new to most of us. Very interesting and unusual contribution, thank you!
Best regards,

Amazing creature, it reminds me of some of the wetas in NZ. Good shot Michal, especially as it was taken in a cave. Well done,

Hi Michal,
That is an amazing shot on the Cave Cricket. It does look exactly like a spider except for the compound eyes. Your fill flash exposure was excellent here. The colors and detail are super. I am sure it was very dark, so it turned really well. Excellent fame filling composition and great DOF has it all looking great. Very interesting notes too!

Wonderful looking specimen Michal, well done.

Hallo Michal,
I thought that I had made somme comment on this picture and I just notice that I didn't concretize. Really amazing creatures, the inhabitants of caves and their way of live. This cricket looks really like a long-legged ghost.
Best regards

Michal, It is a great document. The subject is really unique.
Both the close up and the further view are very clear and detailed. Very descriptive but still with artistic point.
I appreciate the double work.
TFS, and best regards.
