[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
the Black-tailed Skimmer Orthetrum cancellatum
Well distributed, has benefited from the gravel pits and grazing by cattle which creates bare ground. Only recorded at standing water bodies.

Spotting: Often confused with the Broad-bodied Chaser, the Black-tailed Skimmer is characterised by a blue abdomen in the males with a black tip, orange patterns down the sides and a lack of basal black markings on the hind wings. The confusion with the Broad-bodied Chaser is often made over the colouration, but when observed in their respective habitats, there are clear differences.

This species favours sites with bare, trampled ground. When hunting, they make skimming flights over water, very close to the surface and will clash with other males where their territories meet. They can often be observed flying vertically upwards when "fighting" other males.

Females are seen less often, preferring to spend their time in fields and areas away from the water. Their yellow and black-banding colouration is similar to immature specimens of both sexes, such that it is not reliable to sex an immature in the field.

Yes this quick shot i took with only f3.2 and the result well I put my helm on. But a fact is that I like the shot special for his good dof,
gr. Jaap

Hi Jaap,

You did well with this capture and the exposure is good. Your DOF is fine and POV is about the same height as my posting today. :) :)
A reduced flash, called fill flash, might have exposed the legs under the wings that are shaded by the rock.
Well done on this one.

Mike

It's a beautiful dragon-fly, Jaap.
I can see that you found one who sat still ;-))
Not easy to get right exposure, with sunny parts in BG and shadows in the FG, but you manage well. But a fill-in flash
had help to do it even better as Mike mention.
Well composed, nice POV and good DOF.
Very well done, my friend.

Goedenavond Jaap,

Deze is volgens mij veel betere dan andere, maar opnieuw zit ik met de subjectiviteit van mensen, maar hij is gewoon zeer goed Jaap, prachtig van kleur en positie.
Groeten,
John.

3* photo!
Also common in Portugal.

Hello Jaap!
Perfect shot! Interesting moment and just amazing quality!

Baie mooi helder en die fokus is absoluut perfek. You captured the subject really well, well done, Jaap.

Very nice capture Jaap, I cant complain about sharpness on this one its very good revealing lots of nice details. Effective DOF and exposure is well balanced. My only nit is that the wing is rather close to the frame. 6/10 Well done.

Jaap, I do enjoy the shot. I think sharpness is a winner here; you did a great job with it.

I also pov and the blurred bg.

A great shot.

Quick shot? - Are you joking?
It's so difficult to make such a perfect photo of a dragonfly. I tried it today with a small blue one, we don't have big ones in Germany.
But it was only a try - I'm not satisfied when I see you perfect one. Like it so much and I'm a little bit jealous of :-)
Bye, have a nice weekend
