Update with special thanks to Nigel (Merlin)

The Blue Eared Pheasant, Crossoptilon auritum is a large, up to 96cm long, dark blue-grey pheasant with velvet black crown, red bare facial skin, yellow iris, long white ear coverts behind the eyes and crimson legs. Its tail of 24 elongated bluish grey feathers is curved, loose and dark-tipped. Sexes are similar with slightly larger male.

It is found throughout mountain forests of central China. The diet consists mainly of berries and vegetable matters.

One of the most common and numerous eared-pheasants, the Blue Eared Pheasant is evaluated as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Can't go more specific yet...

The Galliformes is an order of birds containing the turkeys, grouse, quails and pheasants. About 256 species are found worldwide.

These birds vary in size from the diminutive Asian Rain Quails (Excalfactoria chinensis) at 12.5 cm long and weighing 28 to 40 g to the largest extant Galliform species, is the North American Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), wild specimens of which may weigh as much as 14 kilograms (about 30 pounds) and may exceed 120 cm.

Great close-up composition Annick,
Color/exposure looks very good, and the eye is clear, detailed and sharp.

Wow amazingly sharp details. The different types of feather are amazing. Lovely colours, composition and POV. Excellent shot

hi annick
joli portrait, avec de superbes couleurs et de bons details mais ce que j'aime le plus c'est la "moustache" de cet oiseau.

Beautiful image! Lots of character, great visual impact. DOF is limited, but in this case it enhances the impact, forcing eye to eye contact with the subject. Very original, technically well executed - thanks. If you were wondering, Blue Eared Pheasant Crossoptilon auritum.

Annick, the portrait you made is wonderful even if this bird is not a playboy ;-) Exposure, sharpness and DOF are very good. Useful note too.
Congratulations and TFS.

A fantastic POV of this magnificent pheasant, Annick.
The colors are vibrant on this rather unusual looking bird.
The details are superb.
Great work and TFS. : )

I didn’t want to miss this one… Wow! I think this family of birds is just amazing; they look so strange! An other bird that is ready for a “bal masqué”. I love this composition which gives us a feeling of movement! Details are very clear and sharp, colors very nice with a good POV. This is a great shot! Thanks!
