Menuetzweefvlieg - (Syritta pipiens) Thick-legged Hoverfly

Being small, this species is easy to overlook but the strange thickened rear leg make it easy to identify at close quarters. This can be an abundant species, in gardens, rough meadows and along hedgerows. It breeds in compost, manure and other rotting organic matter. Sometimes there are notable local population explosions, possibly due to mass emergence or perhaps migration. April to November, peaking in July and August.

Hoi Thijs,
Een heel mooi plaatje van dit vliegje, steekt goed af tegen de kleur van de bloem. Het stuifmeel overal dat geeft toch iets speciaals.

Groet
Vivian

Hi Thijs.
Very impressive close-up picture of a hoverfly on a fine flower. I like magnification level, wide DOF and excellent sharpness and details of both objects. Fill flash as usual is great as well as rich colours and perfect composition of the shot. My best wishes and kind regards.
Alexei.

This is a very nice diagonal composition, with the petals of the flower adding nice and colour and emphasis on this interesting little bug. Nice detail and exposure make this a very nice macro sshot indeed.
