The King Vulture or American King Vulture, Sarcoramphus papa, is the most strikingly colored of the New World vultures.

It is native to tropical lowland forests; its range extends from southern Mexico to southern Argentina, and it can be found at heights up to up to 1200 m.

The King Vulture is the largest New World vulture outside of the condors, at about 80 cm (32 in) in length, a weight of 3.3 kg (7.2 lbs) and a wingspan of 2 m (6.6 ft). It has a yellow fleshy crest (wattle) on its bill, and the bare skin of its head is yellow and red. Its plumage is black and grey, but it has pink and yellow tinges. The eyes are straw-coloured in the adult. There is little sexual dimorphism: males and females have no difference in plumage and little in size. Usually only one egg is laid, and both parents incubate. Chicks have brown plumage, and do not acquire adult coloration until about 18 months of age.

In the hieroglyphics of the Pre-Columbian Maya civilization, the King Vulture stands for K'ib' (Cib), the 16th day of the 20-day "month" in the Maya calendar

Que retrato tan bonito de este impresionante buitre, en vez de plumas parace que tuviera pelo.
Un saludo

Hi Annick

Wow... this is an ugly bird! This side on view reminds me of Quark, the Ferengi bar keeper in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Excellent colours. Nice work. :-)

Amazing colors in this vulture portrait!
Excellent sharpness and details.
Nice day to you, too.

Hi Annick!
Very beautiful portrait! I really think you should create a new theme, something like "bird portraits" or similar one :)
Great POV, DOF and sharpness. Maybe I would change a little colour balance (to make colours more intensive) but I still like this picture a lot.
Greetings and TFS,

Great portrait of thsi impressive vulture. The eye contact is fantastic.
Great sharpness and well contrsted against the background.

Hello Annick,
Wow, what a close-up! Fantastic sharpness and colours in this magnificent portrait. Both picture and note are very interesting!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Annick,
This is one of my favourite birds, so photogenic and plenty of textures and colours!
And you catched him with very good details.
You had a strong light but managed it pretty well with that almost light speed shutter speed, really a fast one.
I like the inclusion of the light feathers of the uper body into the framing.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,

bonjour annick

Bonjour Annick
Très beau portrait de ce rapace, excellentes couleurs, netteté et beau cadrage. Bravo
Amicalement Robi

What a great "technicolor" shot! It is so well exposed, and sharp. All that color gives this strange fellow a certain beauty.

Evelynn : )

I will not say this is a pretty bird, but you sure did capture it as best as possible. The eye detail is spectacular as is the colours.
280mm gave you a nice DOF.
I think for the ISO it is much better than my Nikon can do at this high.
Nice work.
