This is another of the shots from the Gorilla section at Apenheul. This is the Silverback in charge. They had all just gotten thrown some food and, as you can see, he's making it known that what he has is definitely his. There's nothing like a stare from a Silverback Gorilla :-).
The Silverback's are called that, not because they are a different species (because they aren't), but rather because the dominant male develops a silver coat of hair/fur on it's back to let the other gorillas know he's in charge. If there are two dominants in a group then one ends up taking off to find a new group. At this facility, this guy's brother was also a dominant male, so he ended up with a small island of his own with two females. In some of my other pictures, you can actually tell that the females have a little more brown to their black coloring and that some of the young might end up as dominants because of the way their coloring is starting to develop.
Focal length was at 155mm for this shot and ISO at 320. |
