Phyllopertha horticola, female

The Garden Chafer has a rusty brown colour. The head is black with striking eyes bulging out. Reaching some 11mm, iti is much smaller than the May Chafer is and almost hairless. The grub lives underground for two years and eats roots as well, mainly those of grasses.

Adult beetles of the Garden Chafer emerge in May/June and mate. Females burrow into the ground to lay their eggs. Eggs hatch about 4 weeks later forming characteristic "C"shaped grubs - staying close to the soil surface until early October after which they move deeper to hibernate. They pupate the following April.

Very good shot of this Beetle resting on a leaf.

Well done and TFS.

Hi Marie,
Great macro of this common species, looks really interesting on this leaf, great DOF and composition. Nice small ant on the top:)

Hi Marie

Gee, he looks as hairy as me (lol, my last name is Chafer).

Good sharpness, details and DOF. Good colours and exposure.

Pretty hairy for such a small creature, Marie Christine.
And that shows how finely you've captured the details!

Hi marie,

What a nice photo you did. The image quality is excelent. First of all it is amaising the very deep DOF having in focus the whole body of the insect and part of the leave. I like very much the warm color tones of the photo as well as the feeling everithing is absolutely natural.

Interesting to know what was doing the ant there!

Hi Marie,

Just marking up, be back later...

Splendida macro, bellissimi composizione e il forte contrasto di colori, ottima nitidezza, perfetta esposizione a luce mista. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello Mariki,
A great macro of P. horticola, that is a garden pest here!
The sharpness and composition on a thistle leaf are great, especially with the ant captured in the spider thread. The falsh ahs been skillfully used to give just the right lighting and colours.

Hi Marie,
Outstanding amcro shot of this Garden Chafer with lovely colours and sharpness. The bright sunlight gives it a perfect punch amd makes the image glow. The ant hanging there from a speder net gives a fine perspective too. Excellent DOF, POV and composition. Kudos.
