Just before pressing the shutter the st. Martins fly landed on the wings of the Large red damselfly. I was very lucky with the possibility to capture this scene.

Large red damselfly
Length: 36mm
A large, active, deep red damselfly with black legs and a bronze-black top to the thorax which has broad red or yellow stripes. The female exists in several colour forms varying in the amount of red and black on the abdomen from nearly all black in f. melanotum to mainly red in f. fulvipes. The pterostigma is black. This is one of the earliest species to appear each spring.

St. Martins fly
This large black fly is widespread and common and it can be found swarming over grassland or in the lee of bushes in May and June with its long legs dangling below.

The name comes from the fact that the adults usually emerge around St Mark's Day, 25th April. These flies are thought to play an important role in pollinating fruit trees and other plants. The larvae feed on the roots of grasses and they are occasionally cereal pests as well as on decaying organic matter and are frequent in compost heaps.

Males are easily distinguished as they have huge, bulbous eyes, giving them a large head in comparison with the female.
