We’ve had loads of snow in the past few weeks but never a cloudless day except for last Sunday morning. The evening before I looked out of my window and saw that it was snowing again. After checking the weather forecast I decided to set my clock for an early morning rise and take break in the clouds to my benefit.

The next morning after a short walk I arrived at this spot which I visited almost two years ago with similar weather conditions as we are having now. I positioned myself in almost the exact place as then but this time using my UWA lens, a tripod and a 1 stop grad ND filter. Since this lens has a lot of distortion I wanted to keep the horizon as close to the center as possible and still trying to get a balanced composition. Otherwise the trees would end up with an unnatural curve and my pov needed to change drastically.

Some might say that I needed to correct my color balance, because the snow has turned to blue. But, I prefer to capture the real blue color and not the color human eyes adjust to after being outside for a while. This is the true color temperature while adding warmth would be the incorrect color temperature.

Hi there neighbour.

I cannot recall we ever ended up being neighbours, but I'm sure we could live quite
peacefully next to each other. You with your snow and me with my kitty cat.

This "Blue Morning" is magic. Visually stimulating and very interesting with loads of
goodies to keep the eyes busy. Like the stack of wood piled with snow and lying in
the foreground, the footprints leading away into the distance, the smoothed area of
snow in the centre leading of into the distance, who knows where, the trees in the
background making me wonder what kind of "dangerous animal" might jump out at
any moment, the wonderful blue sky, and finally the branches coming in from the top
to frame the image.

It is good you left the blue colour of the snow just as it is, because it adds to the mood
and the atmosphere of the image and after all it is just cool. Read "cool" as in brilliant
rather than cold. I just love it MF.

Well done and TFS.

Hello Niek,
What a wonderful winter scene showing the colours just as 'cold' as they are early on a clear morning here! A lovely composition with the overhanging branches and wooden logs in the foreground and the tracks in the snow leading us across the frozen water. Beautiful light and colours too! Very well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hello Niek,
splendid chromatic tones, in a very beautiful composition, splendid landscape photo!
keep photographing! TFS

Hello Niek,

A great Winter/snow capture with such serene beauty, details & setting. Very nicely taken, composed & presented. TFS & regards.

Hi Niek,

This is a wonderful wintry landscape. Well composed with the branches framing the top and the nice foreground interest in the logs. I like how the snow is in almost pristine, untouched condition.
Great capture and TFS

Ha Niek,

Prachtig plaatje
Scherpte/diepte, Kleuren en POV zijn uitmuntend

Hallo Niek,
Goed weekend,

Hi Niek. It was worth geting up for. You have made the best of the early sun light on the trees. I like the way you have included the snow coverd branches in the forground. My eyes are taken right up into the picture. A beautiful taken picture. TFS.

hallo Niek
super opname ,de zon in de toppen van de bomen
met het donkere wit eronder maakt het bijzonder

super shot

Well, I'd like a bit of snow. All we have had is rain for "days on end."

I really like the great depth in your sharp winter scene. I'm afraid I am one of those who would just HAVE to alter the white balance a bit. Some icy blue is nice but too much looks unnatural to me. Did you try a custom white balance on a clear area of snow? I think the result would have been quite different. It is still quite beautiful. I LOVE the lacy trees, especially the ones with the light on the tops.

I'm still waaaiting! :º(

Hi Niek,

A very attractive vertical landscape, impeccable setting for the exposure, archieving to complete the difficult task of recording those hues of whites and blues in a very well balanced shot.

I do not usually very interested in landscapes, my passion are insects. But this picture of you, strike me just saw in the gallery. Very good work Congratulations!

Ciao Niek. Intrigant POV to obtain the best perspective. Very good dephting detailed view in amazing atmosphere.

Hi Niek

Seems you have had quite a bit as well. Have been snowed in for a few days now - about 30cm here, more forecast - not sure I beleive it, but like you there has been little in the way of clear skies during the day for photos. Managed to get a dawn shot of my tree the other day, but reluctant to post too many of the same tree... though there was a stunning sunset last night, I missed it because we needed to get some supplies in.

I like what you have done with the composition though I feel like there is a very slight tilt to the picture (I feel like the left side needs to be very fractionally higher - but that is probably me).
I can cope with the blue tint, I often see it in the mountains and given that my glasses automatically polarise everything, I see it more than most, so have no issues with it!
Foreground is great, though maybe a little dark? I am wondering if 2x1 stop soft graduated netural density filters would have given you a better shot, one just over the top of the logs and the other where you already have it. just a though.

Anyhow - hope you get some more - My work (school) have decided that they are opening on Monday for the 1st day of term whilst the state schools remain shut, so once again I have to try to get in, so no shots for me, unless I can get anything around work at lunchtime, but it is all woodland and very little in the way of views...

Hi Niek

Great winter scene capture from very nice vantage point with excellent DOF, great clarity and delightful composition.
TFS and have a nice day!

Ps. Sorry for late commenting. I had some internet connection problems to TN.

Hi Niek

See, this is exactly what i thought of when taking to you about snow-filled landscapes :)
I really liked your last shot of this place and seeing a new one from here, i really like it, too.
The serenity of the scene is fantastic here and it's only the little foot prints that make the scenery look real and not fairytale like :)
The UWA does give your compo a terrific feel, too and i particularly like the branches on the top and how they seem to stretch over the entire landscape.
I personally feel that the color balance is fine here. It's the blue sky reflected in the snow that gives it this tint. Plus, in this case i'm judging after the tip of the tree that in direct sunlight...and that one seems very well balanced in terms of color casts.
Overall, a superb work, my friend!

Cheers and, again, have a cracking 2010!

Hi Niek,
well chosen portait framing here, the shot has a felling of subdued silence and a lovely natural bluish hue that only snow can provide! The little splash of light on the tree tops is superb and adds so much.Is it me, or is the shot tilting slightly to the down to the right? Apologies if i'm wrong!

Hi Niek,

Back for a post and visit thanks to Loot. Looking to see who was still active that I remember.

I see you are still taking superb landscapes. I love the vertical composition here with the strong foreground elements of the snow covered logs. A spot on exposure. The fist touch of sunlight on the tree top and the pale blue sky put it over the top for me. Well done!

I think you have Captured it Perfectly Niek
