The Great Cuckoo-dove (Reinwardtoena reinwardti) is a species of bird in the Columbidae family. It is found in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

Identification: Length 47 cm. This very striking cuckoo-dove should not be confused with any sympatric pigeons. The large size, very long tail, creamy-white to silvery-grey head and underparts, strongly contrasting with the rich chestnut-maroon upperparts, wings and tail, readily identify it.

Habits: Frequents the canopy and mid-stage of primary forest. Nearly always seen singly or in pairs, very occasionally in larger congregations at fruiting trees with other frugivores.

The Cuckoo-dove makes its nest in rock gorges near waterfalls, and their calls are the two-part wok-wu, heard above the sounds of the water. In motion the bird bounces up and down in place, stable on the first syllable (wok), bouncing up on the higher outward syllable (wu). This is reflected in the dance of the Kaluli drummers of Papua New Guinea.

Habitat: Chiefly a bird of primary forest and forest edge. On mainland New Guinea occurs from sea-level, usually near hills, up to the tree-line at 3380 m.

Distribution: New Guinea and the islands North and West of it, including the Molucs.

Sources: different sources from internet: Wikipedia and ‘Pigeons and doves of the world’ by David Gibbs, Eustace Barnes and John Cox.

This photo is taken in Arnhem, Burgers’ Zoo. A big part of this zoo consists of huge covered halls with a theme in each hall. For instance there are halls of jungle, desert, ocean and mangrove. In each hall are matching animals and plants. This photo was taken in the jungle hall.

Hello Peter, congratulations on a new species for TN.
A gorgeous bird that I originally thought was a type of pigeon. Reminds me somewhat of the Red-billed Pigeons I have seen in Nicaragua. The plumage is so pretty and it has such a long streamlined body. Nicely focused and displaying wonderful clarity and good DOF. Exposure is perfect and I like the composition. Well done!!
