[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
There has been a number of posts on TN of this species (Maniola jurtina - Meadow brown). It is a male, because the light band on the hind wing is less present. More information has already been given by other people.

With this picture I am curious about your opinion. While postprocessing I sharpened 6 times using the unsharpen mask (100%; 0.2; 0). This time I think I went too far. Especially the patterns on the hind wing don't look like 'normal' anymore, in my opinion. I wonder whether you agree with me....That is because I'd like to hear other photographers ideas about where the limit of sharpening is. Because there is...isn't it? While sharpening it always looks sharper doing it one more time, but sometimes I become blind of side effects.

All critiques and comments are welcome. And you may be honest...;-)

Hello Jacob,
Looks OK to me. No visible noise in the back ground. No trace of over contrast. Good quality of sharpness. This is an impressive picture.

Hi Jacob

Wow!!!!! Spectacular shot. No nits here simply superb. Congrats!

bonjour jacob

Great macro from the Meadow Brown Jacob. Very good composition with very good sharpness and very good details. Very good job. Well done. Thank you for posting.

Hello Jacob,
It looks spot on to me! Excellent colours and composition too!
TFS, Ulla

Hoi jacob,

Looks OK to me, sharpening is a personal thing I think. If you think you've done enough, then you've probably done enough.

Well composed, good OOf background.

Looks good from my side of the monitor.

Great colors and nice framing.

Wings look a bit extremely sharp but the body looks great. May be using differnet USM levels to different part would be better.
Anyway really good photo with DOF and composition.
TFS Jacob.

Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

Aesthetically and technically an excellent capture Jacob, with very marked details as much in the butterfly as in the flower.
I love intense but natural colors, on a very diffuse bottom and a perfect control of the illumination.
DOF allows an integral focus on the whole scene, with a framing vertical and centered very appropriate in this case.
Thank you and greetings... Ricardo

Hoi Jacob,
Prachtige compositie, scherpte spat van het scherm. Kleuren en achtergrond goed. Zo hoort een vlinderfoto te zijn.

Hi Jacob,
It is very sharp indeed. It is hard for me to say if this is too much as I always have the same problem you have :) This is a great composition with excellent POV and DOF. I love the fact that you caught great details on the flower as well. Congratulations!

Hi Jacob

In my opinion, it looks great. The sharpnesss level is excellent and doesn't look over the limit at all :)
The POV is also great, the DOF is impecable and the colors are very lovely.
I also like the framing and the compo, with it on the top of that beautiful flower.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Jacob,
the sharpness looks ok in my big monitor.
The DOF is very good, the entire subject within focus and BG nicely blurred. NIce colours and composition too.
Well done.

Hello Jacob,
my first impression looking at the butterfly before reading your text was that the hindwing area and the area of the forewing tip were sharpened too much. Upon closer looks on other parts of the butterfly, however, I could not find any further signs of over-sharpening. In particular, the antennae are not 'broken' often a sign of 'too much sharpness'. The orange-brown wing areas appear very smooth, just as they look in reality. The hinwing surface appears rather coarse and the delicate line patterns are only slightly visible.
Best wishes, Peter

Wonderful textures of this butterfly and very good idea with vertical format.

Outstanding colors! I agree you can over sharpen, but I think the sharpening is perfect on your photo. Very nice composition.
