Wolf fish (Anarhichas lupus)

Reaching sizes up to 125 cm. Weighing up to 20 kg.

The wolf fish is easy to recognize. It has a long dorsal fin from its neck and backwards. The jaws are powerful with several rows of thick teeth. Its mouth is fit for crushing things and its favorite food is sea urchin. It can easily crush a human hand, so be careful handling the catch. The wolf fish is also feeding on crabs, shells and sea snails. In Norway this fish is called "grĺsteinbit", meaning; grey-stone-bite. The skin is non colored, but has striped patterns in shades of grey. The skin is so thick that it is suitable for preparation, then used as leather. The wolf fish may look like a cat due to the shape of its head and its eyes. Therefore it is also called catfish. It spawns during the winter months.

The wolf fish is common along most of the Norwegian coast. North of Bergen you may also find its relatives: Anarchichas minor (with spotted pattern) and Anarchichas denticulatus (dark blue with no pattern). The wolf fish lives in shallow waters and down to 450 meters depth. That means you may find it both off coast and in fjords. It often feeds in areas with see weed. The meat is delicate and often served as chops.

More info:

I took it at Polaria Aquarium, Tromso, Norway. Not so clear, considering the glass between us.

I don't know this fish. Good shot of it through the thick glass window, Bima. It isn't easy to get good photos through the glass.
And interesting notes too - he looks a big fish - growing up to 125cm and 20 kg. And look at that mouth!!
Thank you for sharing

Hello Bima,
Amazing looking fish you show us here. I never heard about this species. Good picture if we consider that you took it through glass. I like the words you wrote down in your presentation.
Thanks and best regards

Hi Bima,
Wonderful close-up shot of this scary looking Wolf Fish. Very impressive sharpness and the golden light gives it a beautiful tinge. Great skill involved considering you took it through the acquarium glass. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Hello Bima,
it's am impressing close up of the wolf fish, well taken in the seawater aquarium. Thank you also for the well informing note. The glass in between did not much affect the quality. The possibly unnatural tinted colour may have been caused by the artificial light - it may be easily treated with some postprocessing. Made a try in the workshop.
I like the words you wrote in your intro. Welcome to TN!
With best regards,

hello yasin
very good
thank you

Nice POV, DOF and detail Bima, it's a well composed portrait.
Great post, aquarium shots are hard to pull off..
But you succeeded very well here :)

The details are wonderful,
Very good pov.

Hi Bima,
Nice pic, the glass isn't disturbing, but the photo's too yellow. I've made my version - click WS, please.
Best regards from Hungary, László
