Smiling Ice Bear

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Not my best photo technique-wise at all, but one still worth sharing, I think.
This Arctic day was hazy, but sunny. Our ship crept upon a polar bear just finishing a meal of most likely a ringed seal. He seemed quite pleased with himself, and I was happy to capture this moment.
Ringed seals are the favorite food of polar bears who are likely to eat forty to forty-five annually. The bear looks for breathing holes in ice created by the seals, and waits patiently for hours until a seal comes up to take his last breath.
Twenty-five to thirty thousand polar bears remain in the wild. At the top of the food chain in the Arctic environment, their only predator is man. |

Dear Eloise,
I like photos which tell a story - and this one is DEFINETLY worth telling. Thanks for sharing this interesting photo.
When I first joined TrekNature I enquired about the ''technical not so good photo'' side and was reassured, that this site's aim to educated be very important to the members.
In this particular case I appreciate very much the fact that you included the habitat, which not many of us have seen...
Enjoy your week-end
Kind Regards
Ingrid
