Hello my Friends!
There is the autumn all around now, and really this is no my favourite time, so today I would like to present something from much warmer period of the year :>

Bembix rostrata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Hymenoptera: Sphaecidae), one of 16 species from this genus known from Europe and one of some 9000 species belonging to this family. Picture taken in the Spala Landscape Park.

Distribution: great part of Europe, Centaral Asia.

Habitat: warm open areas, usually with sandy ground where it nests under the ground (please note the hole in the sand on the right side of photo!). In such places very often there are many nests of this species (a single female builts several in one time). Vey often it co-occurs with some other members of this family.

Food preference: in adults usually nectar of different flowers, for larvae diffent species of flies (often Syrphidae and Tabanidae). Prey is paralizing by female using her sting and then it is bringing to the nest. The last stadium of larva can eat even 50 flies per day!!!

Size: 15-22mm, one of the biggest Central European Sphaecidae wasps.

Endangered status: in some coutries it is endangered because of habitat declinig.

If you are interested, please feel free to watch also two other Sphaecidae wasp species photographed in this park and presented by me earlier here and here :>

Hi Radek

Another great and very interesting macro from you, my dear frined that doesn't like autumn :)
I fint this species very "cool" - especially having those rather bright eyes...i'm used to much darker colors in the eyes of our insects :)
But i guess that's an element that makes this macro such a nice one.
Also, if i'm right, and that there is its hole, it's very interesting to see it's "house". Usually, even in good macro shots, we don't see that part of the insect world (with maybe the exceptions of spiders...which are usually presented on their web), so that too me counts a lot - not only the insect is important here.
Other than that, the details and textures on the wasp are impeccably clear while the colors are lovely.
I'm also impressed ith your flash work here - it's hardly noticeble. It doesn't have that flare and that look of "too bright" patches - like most picutres do - but i'm sure that we all would have noticed something wrong if you didn't use it (hope you know what i mean) :)
So, overall: a gorgeous image!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Ciao Radomir,

Hi Radomir.
We had only hot season this summer. Despite the shot is taken in July the colours are cold and amazing at the same time. I see these colours are firm to your camera. They are always clean and rich. Shot is well composed. Diagonal structure of the image is so attractive. As usual. sharpness and details cannot be better. Great close-up picture. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.

Hi Radomir

Excellent POV with razor sharp focus. Wonderful!

James

Excelente enfoque y fidelidad en los colores. Buen encuadre. Bello conjunto y valorable documento.

Un saludo Radomir

Radomir, this image is life-like, as the cliched saying goes.
As a matter of fact, this picture gives one the impression as if one is lying prone on the ground and looking at this wasp from a close distance. I'm sure you must have taken this shot from a similar position.
Thanks for sharing this stunning picture and forgive me for not being able to reciprocate to your kind critiques in a timely manner.
Best regards,
Ram

Hello Radomir,
Yet another excellent insect shot from you from a very low POV. How do you do it - do you lie flat on the ground, do you use a mini tripod?? This is really excellent. I like that big eye and details are very sharp. You've caught it in a very fine pose by its hole. Interesting note too.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

This is a fine picture by a scientist and photographer. Well noted and endangered yet. You show your interest in the smallest and most vital things which we at times must be reminded. Very good lesson sir.

Hello Radomir,
This is great!
Superb capture of a digger wasp, a species that I have not seen in Sweden.
This macro is of excellent quality and the wasp is nicely posed infront of its hole in a fine composition.
Well done and thanks for sharing this valuable shot,

How can you don't like autumn? It is my favorite season :)! I have heard about those insects and your post is much interesting as we see it in action. Details are very good and so are composition, exposure and POV. This wasp has the most beautiful eyes I have never seen on a wasp :) Well done!

Hi Radomir,
This is a very good macro!
I like the proper focus on the insect and all the details caught on it.
It's textures and colours are displayed so good, specially the big green eye and the light reflected on the wings.
You did a great job with the fill flash.
The frame and presentation gets the best of the subject and the image in general.
My compliments and thanks for post it.
Best regards,
JM

Hello Radomir,
again I'm late in visiting your gallery. That'sn good in a way, so I don't have to tell you any more why your picture has turned out so well :-) ! I recognize the sand from your other pictures. I want to stress the point that you present such interesting insects I have rarely ever seen. And your notes are already legendary, they add to the quality of the picture. By the way, your Photo Info menu yields completely strange values. Thanks for this top quality picture.
best regards
Dietrich

Great picture of this wasp.
Great color, lighting and sharpness.

Hi Radomir,
A nice and clear capture of this digger wasp. I have no idea if these are found here or i have ever seen this thing for real. But it is a beautiful one provided that it is non-venomous and unaggressive. Very nice composition and details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Bonjour Radomir,

Hi Radek,
An awesome macro capture of this wasp which i did not see before with excellent clarity and nice composition.
TFS and cheers,
Bayram
