Hello my Friends!
The Christmas or -if you like - holiday period is just ending and "normal" life is comming again... But today I would like to show you a picture taken during holiday too, but a little warmer - last summer holiday :>

This is a male of may fly Ephemerella ignita (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae). It is easy to recognize thanks to its red, huge, "turbinate" eyes. Its size is some 15 mm only.

But why "turbinate"? Well, the eye is divided into two parts: an upper one is red and much bigger - thank to that it looks a little similat to a turban on a human head. This part of eye has also much bigger ommatidia than the lower one. The lower part is "normal", not so huge, and not red. Interesting is that females have typical eyes.
The "turban-like" eyes are characteristic for males in Baetidae may flies, but especially well seen (thanks to vivid colouration) in genus Ephemerella.

Ephemerella ignita is not rare species in Poland and Central Europe, and as a larva it inhabits different types of rivers and streams, from mountains to lowlands.

If you are interested in some details more about this insect order, please feel free to watch my earlier picture of may fly here.

This picture was taken at night (may fly was atraccted to the light), something about 10 p.m.

Hi Radomir,
excellent detail and clarity, the dark background has really made your subject stand out here. Does shooting this kind of thing at night require any special equipment or technique? Please excuse my ignorance in this matter :o)

Super fine detail here Rad...Very high quality work with that camera....You sure know your insect world...do you think it is true that John Baptist ate only locusts? I have often wondered...

Hello my friend!

Nice to see you again and i would like to take this chance to wish you (although i'm a little late, i know) very happy holidays and the very very best in all aspects for the next year!
2007 was indeed a great year, one in which i made very many friends all over the world, among which i'm happy to have you too. Let's hope that in 2008 we'll meet or at least collaborate in other aspects, too :) (by the way, did you know that our publication - the North-Western Journal of Zoology is now covered by ISI?... :) )

And now for this great may fly shot: i love it!
I've always considerred mayflies as delicate beauties but i never managed some nice shots of them. However, i see you have, and of more species, including this amazing one with such vivid red eyes...wow! They really look amazing!
I also like the fact that there is nothing else in the frame to distract the attention froe subject...the small advantages of shooting at nights ;)
Very good side POV, excellent sharpness and magnification and very good flash work, too.
A pleasure to watch...i hope you'll get more next year so that all of us can enjoy these magnificent creatures.

Bravo and TFS my friend!
Horia

Hi Radomir.
Perfect night shot. I only several night wild nature pictures. It is really difficult task.
Flash work is superb as well as the sharpness and details of the insect and twig. Composition is wonderful too. Many thanks and kind regards.
Alexei.

Hi Radomir,
your may-fly is wonderful and I'm happy you show it, because I also made a shot of a similar one this year, but with yellow eyes.
And I was curious if it realy was a may-fly, the others had more tiny eyes - and not yellow.
Sometime I will also show mine.
Thanks for yours, I like it

Ciao Radomir,
