Dear Friends and Colleagues!
The 2008 was just started so I would like to wish all of you a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! :)

And because today is the first day of new year, please let me show you something really special :)

This is a hermit beetle Osmoderma eremita (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), known from great part of Europe, including: Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine. Known before also from the Netherlands, but unfortunatelly it extincted in this country. In most of coutries where it is occurring - it is rare or extremely rare and strictly protected. It is also placed in VU category in all these European countries.

And here are some facts about this beautiful species:

Size: up to 30-45mm (females are bigger)

Habitat: usually forests, always with old trees - mainly Quercus spp., in some regions known also from old parks.

Food: larvae are saproxylophagous, what means that they eat decaing wood, adults prefer more "sweet" food, like plant juices.

Life cycle: from the egg to the adult it takes even 3 years. Female can lay not more that only some 30 eggs.

The picture was taken in Spala Nature Reserve, Spala Landscape Park, C Poland, where many old trees can be found. This landscape park is known as one of only few places in Central Poland where this interesting species occurs.

And last but not least, I would like to dedicate this picture to the great Italian entomology lover - Marcello Romano (marcellr). Dear Marcello, thank you very much for your very interesting lessons about different insect species!!! :>

Hi Radomia. What a fine close up of the shiny beetle. You sharp focusing has given fine detail , with natural looking colours.. yoyu can see all the markings so well on the body. a good low POV. well done TFS. intersting notes thanks.
Nick..

All the best for 2008.

Dear Radomir,
Thank you for a very clear photo of this rare scarabeid beetle and for the valuable information. Your "bugs-eye-view" has perfect DOF so every point of the beetle is sharply in focus, colors are good in spite of some unavoidable reflections originating from the fill-in flash, altogether a very good composition, TFS.

Piekny chrzaszcz, caly czarny i blyszczacy. Idealna jakosc i jak zawsze swietna nota.

Caro Radomir,
Marcello

It is a pleasure not only to look at your beautiful captures (most unique this time) but also to read your informative notes. It is more and more difficult to find ancient forests, they are not productive, and unfortunately $ rules the world.
In our area, even natural reserves are being exploted :(
But when you go into them, wonders like this beauty can still be found.
Happy 2008 from Felipe & Cris.

Hi Radomir.
You are right. I have met this species very often in our places. And it is a very attractive photo model/ I like excellent sharpness of the image and perfect fill flash work. As usual for your insect shots DOF is great. I like wide DOF so much. All the best to you in started year and TFS.

Hello Radomir,
This is a great macro of a beautiful and rare scarab.
The abdomen looks quite swollen. I wonder if this is a female with eggs.
It looks as though the light was difficult so you have done a great job.
I hope you have a wonderful year.
Happy 2008
(I'll have to catch up with some of your great posts I have missed)
Cheers

Hello Radomir,
I'm sorry to have by-passed your capture of this interesting Beetle. I've only seen traces of this rarity in the mulm of an Oak tree in Ostergotland up north! Interesting to see this fine close-up. I like the low POV and the detailed legs!
Many thanks and all the best wishes for 2008!

Hello Radomir,
This is a great posting! The hermit beetle is rare in Sweden and strangely enough it is now mostly found where the rich land owners of the past planted oaks in the park-like grounds. These oaks have now become large and old and many are hollow to provide habitats for the Hermit Beetle.
This is a fine sharp image taken from an excellent POV and I'm sorry to have missed it earlier but I take the opportunity in wishing you a Happy and Successful 2008!
Ivan

Hi Radomir,
A great shot at this hermit beetle. Sharp and well exposed image. The dark texture is clearly seen and appreciated. Sorry that I missed this new year picture. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy new year.

Hi Radomir,
A beautiful capture of this hermit beetle. I have heard of hermit crabs but a hermit beetle I am hearing from you for the first time. Excellent details and composition with informative notes. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Randomir,
Thanks for sharing this interesting specie! Details are very sharp in a nice composition and POV. I like the brilliance on the insect. Well seen!
Claudine

Hi Radomir, great dedication to our friend Marcello, superb macro of rare beetle with wonderful details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi again, Radomir,
that is a big surprise, less the picture but the species presented. Of course I heard of Osmoderma since my boyhood- beetle-collecting- times but I've never seen one, not even on a photograph. Here it comes, complete withvthe strange hick on the elytrae, one more quirk of evolution. Well done! Good dedication.
My best regards
Dietrich

Hola Radomir,
