[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last time I presented a defence pose of amphibian species, today I would like to write a few words aboout self-defence strategies in much smaller animal group - moths :)

There are many different strategies which allow to stay alive, but moths usually "prefer" the following ones:

1. Camouflage - simply, the way to be invisible, it is common in many moth families like Geometridae, Noctuidae, Notodontidae, Lymantriidae, some Sphingidae.

2. Mimicry or mimetism - an undangered species "tries" to look like noxious or dangerous species of wasps, bees, ect. It is the most popular in family Sesiidae, but also in some Sphingidae.

3. To look bigger than it is in real - structures like "big eyes" present on the hindwings suggest that the moth is... not a moth, but any bigger creature (big eyes are present in big animals). Known in many Saturnidae and some Sphingidae.

4. To be toxic - mosaic of colours clearly suggests "don't eat me, I am poisonous!" This strategy is especially common in Arctiidae family.

Of course the hero of this picture belongs to the 3rd category. It is Smerinthus ocellatus (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) - in English: Eyed Hawkmoth, in Polish: nastrosz polpawik.

Here you can see another species of Sphingidae which prefer to "be invisible" :>

Picture was taken at 23:15, during my entomologcal studies in the Spala Landscape Park, Central Poland, moth was atracted to the light.

Finally, I would like to dedicate this photo to Ena Simic (ena) :>

First of all, my apologies for not being prompt enough to reciprocate to your critique on one of my recent pictures.

The 'hind' eyes of this unique moth are truly captivating. The subject is so well captured every colour, feature and detail on it is crystal clear.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Radomir,
wonderful this moth at night, showing the eyes and the green spot. Excellent compsition with this grey background. The picture shows a rough pixel structure that I cannot interprete. Maybe the Coolpix compensated for the lack of light by pooling sensors?
Best regards
