Hello my Friends!

Today just another amphibian species but this time a rather rarely observed one because of its unique behaviour - Common Spadefoot or in Polish grzebiuszka ziemna - Pelobates fuscus

And here are some basic facts about this species:

Distribution: from Central Europe to western Asia, and from lowlands to uplands (rather rarely in mountains).

Habitat: adults most of they life spent on the land, only in mating season they can be met in waters. They prefer places with sandy ground, where they can find a shelter under the ground. And here you can find the meaning of species name of Pelobates fuscus - they uses their very characteristic legs to dig in the ground :>

Food: adults are predators and as many other amphibian species they hunt on different small invertebrates like snails and slugs, earthworms, insects and spiders. Only the tadpoles are vegetarians and eat different species of water algae.

Body size: adults are rather medium sized, about 5-7 cm, but the tadpole is the biggest in all European amphibian species! It can be even 12-14 cm long! Please note that it is almost 2 times more than size of adult specimen! Moreover, please remember that the very fresh, young Pelobates fuscus is only 1-1.5 cm long! :>

And here you can see some other species of Polish herpetofauna :>

This photo was taken near Leczyca, in the Pradolina Warszawsko-Berlinska (=Warsaw-Berlin Glacial Spillway). This region is protected by European programme Natura 2000.

As always your opinions and comments are welcomed! :>

great close up, TFS ori

There is something magical about to happen...a kiss awaiting perhaps...then out of the warts and into a companion of immense beauty?

Clear and cammo'ed well as pictured. Fine simplicity in color. Well done....

Hello Radomir,
Excellent sharp capture of the Common (not so)Spadefoot. This shot has very good technical merits.
The question that comes to my mind is how or where did you find this secretive creature? Did you find a burrow and dig it out, or did you look for it night and capture it for photography, or is this a herpetarium specimen (no I don't think so)?
TFs and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Radomir. Amazing clear shot of this tiny fellow. You must have been very excited when you saw him, because i don't think he was easy to spot. His markings blend so well with the background and I can see grains of sand on his face and body, so he must have been digging himself into the soil to some extent. Wonderful capture and very interesting note. Regards, Irmgard

Great shot, even though its not the most beautiful creature it is very interesting.
Very well captured, with excellent colors and great sharp detail.

Hello Radomir,
It is amazing how photogenic frogs can be! I discovered that on TN. You pictured this Common Spadefoot with great sharpness and show well how it is integrated in its surrounding. How amazing the size of the tadpoles. I almost cannot believe it! ;-)
Have a nice day
Anne

Hi Radomir.
What an interesting species of the frog you have pictured. and quality of the shot is terrific. Reproduction of all features of the animal is the best as well as the low POV and great DOF. I like well visible and detailed BG. Composition and cropping are outstanding. Flash work is perfect. too. My best wishes and TFS.

Hi Radomir,

Great picture of this toad.
Great color, lighting, dof, sharpness and background.

Isn't it pretty?
This grey marble textured fellow is very cute and also very well captured. Great use of flash and special mention for managing something beautiful out of that ugly BG. I know by own experience with my fungi, that a mess is the result in most cases ;)
Best regards, MF.
Felipe.

Hi Radomir, splendid photo of this ugly creature, wonderful details, very well done, ciao Silvio
