Today I would like to show you something really "fresh", a picture taken just three days ago, during my short trip to cave "Szachownica I" in Szachownica Nature Reserve, Zalacze Landscape Park. I was there with some friends and we tried to check how many bats are overwintering in this cave :)

There are two individuals of Brown long-eared bat (in Polish: gacek brunatny) - Plecotus auritus - on the left a sleeping one, and on the right side - an active one :) Here and here you can see some other presentations of this species where more details about its biology and ecology can be found.

As it is not my first presentation of Polish bats, please find below a full checklist of Chiroptera of Poland - in tatal 22 species:

Family: Rhinolophidae

Rhinolophus hipposideros
Rhinolophus ferrumequinum

Family: Vespertilionidae

Myotis myotis
Myotis bechsteini
Myotis nattereri
Myotis emarginatus
Myotis mystacinus
Myotis brandti
Myotis dasycneme
Myotis daubentoni
Vespertilio murinus
Eptesicus nilssoni
Eptesicus serotinus
Pipistrellus pipistrellus
Pipistrellus pygmeus
Pipistrellus nathusii
Nyctalus lasiopterus
Nyctalus noctula
Nyctalus leisleri
Plecotus auritus
Plecotus austriacus
Barbastella barbastellus

Well, the characteristic pose of the right specimen clearly suggests what do bats do to "learn the world all around" - they are usiang a hearing sense. But this is not a "normal" hearing, it is the echolocation. But you are wrong if you think that Chiroptera are the only creatures which are using it! There are also other mammals like shrews (Soricidae), whales and delphins, but also birds, including swifts (Apodidae) and oilbirds (Steatornithidae).

And at the end of this presentation, just for fun and to note a very special "similarity" please look here :>

This picture is dedicated to a great mammal and bat specialist from Turkey: Ahmet Karatash (rousettus).

Great work with this bats.

Hello Radomir,
I am very glad with your nice dedication. Many thanks excellent gift for me and your kind words.
We cant see many bat photographs on TN. This is great macro shot of these lovely faced and very long eared bats in hibernation.
Superb and natural coloration and great details of focus.
I have also several Polish collaborators and friends of mine. Several years ago they invited me to Poland for field studies on bats. I couldnt go. I hope in future.
thanks again and I wish you and your family happy new years.

Hello Radomir,
Very scary bat species. Good note and links.
Well done

It is a very beautiful capture of an impressing subject, lovely pose, the moody atmosphere with flash is always a pain and you managed pefectly. The composition rocks :)
With the informative note, a very nice document, congratulations and best regards, Felipe.

Hello Radomir,
superb composition in such good closeness of the bats
perfect clarity, natural colour and so much details in the shot
thanks for the notes
sincerely wishing you and family

Cześć Radku,

Fantastyczne ujęcie.
Znakomita ostrość i kolory.

These creatures in one form or another are over here as well of course...but ours look nothing like this...There shoud be some in Parma, Ohio...but that is another and very long story. I am impressed that there exists such thing as a Polish Bat! And you have captured it. This is very exciting...and thanks to you we now know!

Hello Radomir,
Excellent capture of a Brown Long-eared Bat, I species that I would have great difficulty in differentiating from P. austriacus, even though it is not found in Sweden, unlike the species you show here.
Nice sharpness and flash exposure and a fine pose.
Well done my friend and best wishesfor 2008!

Hi Radomir, strange creature, is the first time that I see on TN, splendid details and excellent sharpness, very well done, HAPPY NEW YEAR, ciao Silvio

Bardzo ladne ujecie. Niesamowity zwierzak. Jedyne do czego moglbym sie przyczepic [;-)] to tradycyjnie lekko fioletowawy odcien od lampy. Naprawde lepiej jest przy lampie uzywac ustawien balansu bieli na swiatlo flasha.
