Babia Gora aka Diablak (1,725m)
My previous post shows the mountain in close-up.
According to folk tales, the mountain was the location of the witches' sabbath (Babia Gora translates Witches' Mountain or Old Wives' Mountain).
Babia Gora is sometimes nicknamed Matka Niepogod (Mother of Bad Weather). Located far from any other mountains of similar height that would provide a natural barrier, it is very susceptible to weather changes. Snow can remain on the northern slopes and in narrow gorges until summer.
From Wikipaedia
What makes this mountain special is the fact that there aren't any such high mountains in the neighbourhood. Therefore, Diablak can be seen from pretty long distances.
Here the mountain is viewed from the North from Kamieniec (small hill near Stryszow and Kalwaria) and the distance between this place and Babia is over 30km! |
