Cataclysta lemnata - Small China-mark
Family: Crambidae

This is quite a unique moth with respect to its life style. The caterpillars are aquatic, feeding on Lemna spp. The first stages are hydrophylic, later their build a small case from Lemna leaves, which is filled with air. Larvae may be found in various type of stagnant waters: ponds, lakes etc. The adults are cream-white with China-like markings on wings, they fly among the bank vegetation.

The one seen here is a larva of first stage, some few hours after emerging from egg, its lengt is some 3mm.
I took the picture with camera attached to Nkon SMZ 800 stereomicroscope.

Later on, I will show you also other life stages of this amazing moth :-)

Nice ultra-macro Michal. Very good clarity, upon the extreme shallow DOF-s at this magnification. I didn't know also about this one. I'm learning a lot of new things from your posts.

Regards, Petru

Excellent closeup. Very good POV and detail.

Nicely done and catchy title

Very good details seen in this Very small new arrival Michal. Well composed showing the translucent quality of the first stage..
Well done.
Thank You!

Witaj Michale,
Pozdrawiam, Jerzy

Cześć :-)
Genialny tytuł! Wygłąda jakby była strasznie głodna ;-))))

I remember keeping China-mark larvae in my freshwater aquarium as a small boy - fascinating little things. You know you're getting a real macro shot when you can start to see cell detail! A nice glimpse into an almost invisible world.
Thanks, Nigel.

Hi Michal!

Something like from my aquarium :-) Very interesting subject with rich life cycle ;-)
Very nice details and sharpness [I know well how hard is to shot good underwater photo]. Especially I like green 'cells' on leaf.
Well - but you were cheating - you used microscope ;-)

Hello Michal
Sorry, no time for a decent critique today, but I like the picture very much :)

A fascinating shot and note, Michal.
I have never heard of a hydrophillic caterpillar.
Can't wait to see the sequels.
Thanks for an elightening post. : )

A very unusual shot, very good in its miniature details, and coming with a very good note, too. Thank you for that fascinating document from another world!
Best regards, Peter

Thanks for presenting this aquatic caterpillar. Thanks for the informative note. Excellent quality of this micro-shot, DOF is high, focus spot on. Cat doesn't seem much perturbated as it is continuing feeding. Congratulations.
