[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On the picture you can see quite exceptional moment - mating Jumping spiders (Evarcha falcata). I haven't seen such view never before and I'm glad I had ocassion to photograph it.

As you can see the male seems to be in a quite unuasual pose as for mating animal, but everything is just as it suppose to be. This is how spiders do it.

The male spiders, contrary to typical arthropods, possesses nothing like a penis. The sperm enter the female's body in quite exceptional way. The spider use his palps which are little leg-like appendages at the spider's head.
Before the male goes searching for a female he deposits a droplet of sperm on a scrap of silk, sucks this into his palp, and keeps it handy as he sets off looking for a female. When he finds his mate and courtship will proceed well (that means "if he won't be eaten") then the male can start mating. He simply reaches beneath the female's abdomen with his palp and inserts the sperm through a slit there.

On the picture you can see this moment. In workshop you can see another view. It's not very clear, but you can notice that the female twisted her abdomen a bit so the male can reach under it and do his job :-)

The mating rituals of spider can be generally dangerous for males because as you probably know many of them can be eaten by the female.

As for jumping spiders - the first part of the mating, courtship ritual is most dangerous for males. The female is bigger and can easily jump on the male and simply kill him. The males therefore try to signalize the female that they are not another prey. Some jumping spiders do it by performing a complicated dance show for a female. They wave their legs and do other rhythmical moves to seduce the female.

Hello Monika, great capture, excllent details, Colors, BG, POV, DOV, Great Job, TFS Kyle

Complicated "mating" made simple by your delightful description, Monika. I love your notes!
The male spider, poor chap, seems to have melted into the female in this amazing shot. The ritual mating dance must have been very interesting, worthy of video-filming, but here we have to be content with just a single image.
Thanks for sharing it.
