Lycaena tityrus.

Wing length 14-17 mm. There is a great difference between the male and the female. The males are very dark brown with lots of black, and some orange, spots on the upper side. Their under side is greyish yellow. The females are orange-brown on the upper wings of the upper side and dark brown on the lower wings of the upper side. The under side is yellow and orange, with big black spots. The main difference with the Small Copper is, that the Sooty Copper has no greyish underside of the lower wings, and has big black spots there, instead of very small ones.

Flying time
Medio may untill medio june and medio july till the end of august.

The males are indeed sooty - hardly any orange on the uppersides at all. The high alpine subspecies, subalpinus, looses all upperside orange even in the females. This subspecies appears to be single brooded, those of lower altitudes are multiple brooded.

I agree with Peter that a closer cropping would improve this photo.
It's a very beautiful and litle Lycaenidae and it's rare in Portugal.
Good POV and BG!
TFS!

Hi Malgosia,
that noble looking male of a rare and endangered species looks very good in the strong sunlight of midsummer against a distant background of lush green vegetation.
You have presented a well balanced composition. But if resolution and sharpness of the original image are good enough, a closer cropping would be recommendable, as many of us may be curious to see that pretty little butterfly in a larger size close-up.
Thank you for the pretty contribution and the very well describing notes!
Best regards,
Peter

Hello Malgosia,
Very nice capture.I liked POV,use of light,BG and composition a lot.TFS...:-)

Wonderful Malgosia! Why? Cause colours are perfect here! Besides, your bg colour was changed and this mixing bg is just perfect! But most important one for me, you're so far from the subject! (despite not suit for macro)But result is incredible. I thought that you're so smart Malgosia! This one is the best one in your gallery! I like it a lot. It looks like a painting!
Thank you!
Ersin

Sorry, points later for this beauty!

Malgosia bonjour, c'est splendide cette photo avec des teintes trés douces on the BG, very well composed and good lighting too. Best regards, Didier.

Hi Malgosia,
you have shown this picture really well, even though the butterfly is 10% of your frame it looks excellent. I like the composition and the colors.
BTW you have proved that a close shot of a butterfly is not necessary for a good photograph, this is an example for all who dont have Macro lens and still want to shoot butterflies! on how to do it, great!!!

Hi Malgosia,
An unusual approach to a Butterfly shot, I think most people (including me) would want to get really close. This is great, it works really well. Excellent detail, DOF is perfect and those colours in the background make the composition really work. Excellent framing/composition, great shot!
Cheers,
Adrian

I like this composition very much Malgosia.

I love the light the POV and the BG.
