Probably one of the most hairy creatures in a kingdom of insects - a caterpillar of Tiger Moth (Arctia caja).

These fellows can be very often seen crawling on roads and pavements and what is quite impressing they can be very quick. It's much easier to take a picture of one of this hairy creatures when it is having a meal. The one on my picture is at the moment busy eating a breakfast. I think the plant is some kind of sorrel.

This exceedingly hairy caterpillars are often called a Woolly bears or Granny greybeards. The hairs on their bodies can cause irritations and their main function is protections against predetors like birds.

As for hairy caterpillars. Sometimes they can be quite dangerous for people.

Some caterpillars release their toxic hairs into the environment where the hairs can be inhaled causing respiratory disease. The hairs can also cause skin irritations. It's very bad if such hair will get into eye, because it has a remarkable penetrating capacity and can cause serious complications.

The picture have been taken at meadows about two km from my house. These are mainy wet meadows that at this time of year are covered with fresh green grass and lots of different wildflowers. The yellow dots in BG are buttercups.

Good Morning,
Excellent, I love it! A punk rocker caterpillar :-) Beautiful clear detail, perfect colours and excellent composition, I really like the arch of the Caterpillar and plant against a clean background.

When I was very small I used to look for Caterpillars and Spiders, any kind of bugs really and I remember my skin itching from the Caterpillars. I had forgotten about that until I read your note. Happy memories.

Great note, excellent post.

What a brush this one is!!
Monika, this is an excellent composition, the POV is good, and the little fellow is quite stunning, sharp and so clear to see. Well done,

Great shot here, Monika! Good framing, great sharpness and proper exposure. Very interesting little fellow and informative description, too. Did you maybe think about raising your POV a litle, so that the background would become single toned, even though the tip of the sorrel would then possibly loose some sharpness? Just a thought, 'cause I like it a lot anyways.
Moje gratulacje,

Superb composition Monika.
Here you've made a simple shot into a masterpiece of how to perfectly frame a catapillar in a field.
Brilliant work, no nits.
Your note about the hairs being irritating was very interesting, I never would of thought of that.

Wow! That is one hairy cat Monika!
Fantastic job with this. From the excellent OOF Bg to the hairy detail, an excellent macro. :)
I always appreciate your work..
I like it!

Hallo Monika, nice picture of the A. caja caterpillar with the plant (I think it is Rumex ?) bridging the two sides of the picture in an elegant arc. In addition the picture is 'smoothly' divided in the horizontal direction by the transition from the meadow to the trees. Excellent composition and sharpness.

Love the framing Monika, DOF and focus spot on!
wonderful note
Thanks for sharing :)

Hello Monika!
Great pov and framing here! Caterpillar's hairs look fantastic! bg is great too! Yellow dots from flowers, and the dark green on the upper side made the bg wonderful!
