The fly life cycle is composed of four stages: egg, larva (commonly known as a maggot), pupa, adult. The eggs are laid in decaying flesh, animal dung, manure,
or pools of stagnant water - whatever has ample food
for the larva.

Some types of maggots found on corpses can be of
great use to forensic scientists. By their stage of development, these maggots can be used to give an indication of the time elapsed since death, as well
as the place the organism died. The size of the house fly maggot is 9.5-19.1mm (3/8 to 3/4 inch). At the height of the summer season, a generation of flies
(egg to adult) may be produced in 12-14 days.

Maggot identification uses a classification called "Instar" stages. An instar I is about 2-5 mm long; instar II 6-14 mm; instar III 15-20 mm. These measure about 2-3 days, 3-4 days, and 4-6 days (for average house flies or bottle flies) since the eggs were laid. By use of this data, plus other signs, the approximate time since death can be estimated by forensic scientists.

Various maggots cause damage in agricultural crop production, including root maggots in rapeseed and midge maggots in wheat. Some maggots are leaf miners.

Maggots are bred commercially, as a popular bait in angling, and a food for carnivourous pets such as reptiles or birds. Due to the increasing popularity of maggots, a maggot vending machine has been installed in the English county town of Northampton.

Bonjour Malgosia,
very precise shot, maybe too short DOF, but very interresting anyway. I wonder how these flies didn't see you with so many eyes? They were really busy... Congratulations!

i find the eyes and hair are really fascinating, good job!
well done & take care, thor.

Hi Malgosia,
there seems to be a deeply rooted prejudice in human heads that common house flies are ugly - maybe because they have some preferences to share with us. I am not an exception, I find it hard to consider a close-up of two flies engaged in sex a pleasant sight. But the way you picture them looks very noble, and makes these flies look just a bit different: Well focussed on the eyes and front legs - and the tender and determined grip of the male on his female lover's head, the rest of the loving bodies softly fading in a gentle falloff of sharpness. Tastefully subdued colours of red and brown hues stand in front of a distant and neutral green background that makes the lovers appear powerful and attractive.
Interesting and unusual presentation of an everday insect - thank you for that! Best regards -
Peter

Hi Malgosia,
This is superb. The details are perfect, great textures, colours and the light is just fantastic. I'm guessing you under-exposed this, the exposure combined with the muted light adds so much atmosphere to the picture. The ultra-shallow DOF is right on the limit I think, you've retained those spiky hairs on the body which is an important part of the insect. Really a great shot.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Malgosia,
Excellent macro, but love or sex? :-)
Thanks For Sharing, regards.

Getting ths kind of shots with so low speed and without flash is difficult. You used very well the ultra short DOF here. Interesting note too. Thanks!

Pozdrawiam serdecznie!
Radek
