One of my favourite flies today. In English it is called Zigzag Beefly, not bad name, but I think Polish is more adequate - She-mourner. It is dark, grim and gloomy. Latin name - Hemipenthes morio - is also related to death. Very stylish fly :-) It can be found on sunny roads near forests, it flies from May to August. Very common this year in my neighbourhood. 5-14 mm long. Very stealth ;-) - it is hard to find info about this fly on Internet in English. Larvae feed on butterflies' caterpillars and, surprisingly, they eat also larvae of other parasitic insects which parasitize caterpillars. Nature is very inventive :-)

Hi Greg,
Excellent shot here on this fly. The exposure looks spot on in this quality light. Great job getting all the texture and detail in the black colored fly. Very cool! This one looks more like an alien space ship.

Wow, Grzegorz. I am not usually into flies, but I have to admit that you captured this one beautifully. Sharpness, exposure, POV, and composition are all excellent. I love that bright green leaf: a great BG to bring out the solemn colors of the fly.
TFS. : )

Hello Greg,

Good detail, colours and sharpness. exposure and lighting are good. Good POV and composition.

Thanks for posting, have a great weekend.

Poland played so well against Germany on Wednesday night. It was a shame to see them go out at the group stages.

Fantastic shot of this uncommon fly, Greg.
I have seen this creature for the first time through the medium of your extremely sharp and colourful image.
What a great POV, focus, details and colours.
Thanks for sharing this gem of a picture.

Wow, what an interesting beefly. I have never seen it before so thanks for the introduction. You have captured it so well with this top-down POV and it captured some lovely details of the insect.
You presented it in a great composition with stunning colours, superb details, lovely BG, and excellent exposure.
Very well done and TFS.

Kapitalna fotka!

Hi Grzegorz,

this picture was posted on the opening page of TN. It dates from a time when I was'nt a TN member yet. Your portrait of the very unusual bee-fly is so impressive it caught my eye right away. You did a very good job handling the many shades of black on the fly. And your comment is really appreciated.

My best regards
Dietrich
