There are two main groups in family Zygaenidae: Foresters and Burnets. The Foresters are usually green or grey, the Burnets usually have front wings black with red spots and back wings red.
All of them are rather small day-flying moths. The maximum wingspan of this species is 32 mm.
Front wings are metalic green, back wings are dark grey.

The moths are on the fly between June and August on dry meadows and forest borders. The caterpilars feeds on different Rumex plants.

Hello Chris,
Thank's for explanation on Zygaenidae. I have seen some of them this sommer. The foresters are specially nice ones. I haven't seen them any more in August.
Not easy to catch them with the right color

Zygaenidae are very special butterflies and often they stay overlooked. thank you for the photo of this rare insect. the details and color are great!
