Carabus auronitens Fabricius, 1792
Family: Carabidae - ground beetles

Carabids are one of the richest beetle families with some 30 000 species currently described. Specialists estimate that the total number of species may be even twice that number. In Poland you can meet some 500 species grouped in 70 genera.

One of the most spectacular is undoubtedly genus Carabus with nearly 30 species, including the biggest carabids in Poland. No question that Carabus auronitens is one of the most colourful among them, easily competeing in beauty with many tropical species.

It's also very common in most areas, living in various kind of forest and hunting restlesly at night for slugs, earthworms or other small creatures. During autumn these beetles gather in decaying logs or trunks to overwinter. Sometimes one can find some dozens of them in one place. Neverthless, as all other members of this genus, Carabus auronitens is protected by law in Poland.

This one is a lady :-) You may tell that looking at her first feet. In females they are narrow and in males more flattened and broader. We used this specimen as a teaching aid, used for the first year invertebrate zoology lab. At the moment she hibernates hapily in our cold room and waits for the spring...

Funny in fact, the spring was almost here - but suddenly there was a heavy snowfall and temperature dropped down below zero. And now it's a winter. For the first time this season...

Hi Michal.
You have done great work. I have read many reviews about this lens. I would not believe in opportunities of this lens if has not seen your picture. Nevertheless, I think that the basic of merits in it belongs to you. Great close-up with perfect reproduction both the details and the colours. Excellent POV, cropping and lighting (soft and impressive). Bravo, My compliments and TFS.
