[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Having spent my first week of vacation in an Hotel resort with few birds around I took about 800 pictures of 5 Hoopoes foraging every morning in the lawn in front of our room.
Some more to follow, needless saying that 790 pictures are ok but still for the trash

In the right moment! Great picture and moment . Congratulation

Dear Tom,
I love Hoopoes, and watched them with big pleasure in our gardens both in Sandton and Hoedspruit. They must like dry climate, because here at the Tzaneen Dam in the past three years I have not seen one yet.

I am not surprised, you took 800 photos watching them! It is a satisfying experience to observe them listening for movement underground, poking into the lawn with their delicate beaks and flicking into the air whatever they had dug up. The latter so wonderfully captured by you in the above photo.

I do not go into your perfect photographic technique praised by so many other members nor your artistic flair for a pleasing presentation; but I want to express my admiration for your patience to wait for the moment when one of the Hoopoes was to catch the insect and CLICK! Catching the moment before the prey disappears into the throat, soil stuck to the fragile beak.

I add this exciting image to my favorites and include your work in my theme "Animals feeding, part two".

Thanks for sharing with us the result of choosing a beautiful bit of nature out of 800 shots.
Enjoy southern Europe, I am looking forward to see many more photos,
Warm regards
Ingrid

Hi Tom,
Very nice portrait of a beautiful hoopoe, one of my favorite bird. Nice colours, sharpness details and very good moment captured. I also this year spent the holidays in Portugal - Algarve - Albufeira.
