Papa-ratos, Squacco Heron,
(Ardeola ralloides)
Hello TN Friends!
Today I present a picture I took yesterday,in the same place then previous posts. Two days ago we noticed that a few of this birds arrived. In the afternoon I went there to observe... after some time they arrived near my car...
This is a rare heron in the national context and can regularly occur in some locations.
"The squacco heron (Ardeola ralloides) is a small heron, 44–47 cm long, of which the body is 20–23 cm , with 80–92 cm wingspan. It is of Old World origins, breeding in southern Europe and the Greater Middle East.
The squacco heron is a migrant, wintering in Africa. It is rare north of its breeding range. This is a stocky species with a short neck, short thick bill and buff-brown back. In summer, adults have long neck feathers. Its appearance is transformed in flight, when it looks very white due to the colour of the wings. The squacco heron's breeding habitat is marshy wetlands in warm countries. The birds nest in small colonies, often with other wading birds, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. Three to four eggs are laid. They feed on fish, frogs and insects."(Wiki).
Have a pleasant weekend and thanks for viewing ... |

Ciao Jose, great capture of lovely Ardeola ralloides in nice walking pose, wonderful natural colors, fine details and splendid sharpness, very well done, my friend, have a good Sunday, ciao Silvio
Hello Jose,
You are lucky to see this species and very well captured. I like its typical walking style which is almost same as Indian Pond Heron and I watch them beside a pond next to my house. Excellent sharpness with very natural color on feathers.
Thanks for sharing,
Regards and have a nice Sunday,
Srikumar
