[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This time a couple of Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina)

The male is unmistakeable with his flamboyantly red head, white flanks and ridiculously pink bill. The female is subtler, browner in tone with pale cheeks and a dark cap recalling a female Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra) but with a longer, slimmer bill and longer, paler body. In flight, Red-crested Pochards of both sexes have a much more extensive white wingbar than any other European duck; all the secondaries and all the primaries look almost completely white in the field, making a stunning sight when seen in a large flock.
This species has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 1,000,000-10,000,000 km². It has a large global population estimated to be 350,000-440,000 individuals (Wetlands International 2002). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
